Bio diesel ?

Anyone running a vehicle on it and what are your thoughts ?

I watched something on telly about this.

Apparently it's not bad at all, and is pretty easy to convert any diesel to run on it.

Thinking about it, I think it was Theo's Adventure Capitalists on BBC. A guy was trying to be the first in India to provide the converters and he wanted to be the main suppliers for the fuel but it wasn't competitive over there.

Perhaps check THIS too before you make any changes to anything to make sure you don't get caught out.

To be honest though I don't know anybody running with it, and I don't know much about it.

Cautionary Note: Biodiesel is suitable for use with any diesel vehicle designed for use with Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel but, being an organic fuel, is not compatible with oil-based paints or natural rubber fuel lines or other components fitted to generators or older vehicles. It will also flush long - term petrodiesel residues from fuel systems. Such users are advised to check compatibility prior to use (VW Group and many other manufacturers now conform to B100) or failing that be advised to check fuel filters after 500 miles. I have been running my fleet on it for over half a year (as at May 2002) and have had no problems caused by this fuel, only benefits

I looked into this too, then noticed the pumps were already in my local Morrissons stores with no price on, so I phoned them later and it was 8p per litre more than diesel :yikes: so I haven't looked at it since. But then I suppose it does cost you less in maintenance or so I've heard, so in the long run may work out even or slightly better maybe.

I think until it's cheaper than diesel there's no real point IMO. It's a shame that. I bet they have price fixed as they make more on the diesel or something.

There's one of the greenfingers on telly (big bloke with a big beard) who makes his own for free. Can't remember how he said he did it but he had drums in his garage, quite a few too.

Apparently it's simple to do, as I've also looked into doing it, but you need to spend a fair amount of time "brewing" it up and a fair bit of space and equipment to do it, two commodities I don't have at present, not to mention all the health and safety issues of storing ethanol etc. etc. Rules and regs eh? Know anyone that sells red diesel?😳 Only joking mr revenue and customs man.

I am sure i have just seen it at about 80 pence a litre in Walsall ! I will check it out againg tomorrow.

Deffo Bio Diesel. A guy was selling it from a steel cabin on the forecourt of a garage.

I just stick vegetable oil in mine to get better mpg from my diesel

one fish cake & chips please!!, i was in tesco's the other day and a guy in a landrover came out with the shopping trolley full of cooking oil and filled his tank up then left all the empty containers in the trolley :yikes: i thought that good for the environment :yikes:

I wouldnt use the homemade stuff...a mate of mine bought all the gear to do it...after 6 months needed a new fuel pump and a few other bits..cost him £2,000 on repair bill, it was a vw transporter he had.

If you have a new or nearly new vehicle I would contact your manufacturer first to make sure it won't have any implications on your warranty

My friend looks after my van at his garage, he does all repairs and services etc, two years ago we had this discussion about chip fat oil instead of diesel, he guaranteed that my van would run on it no problem and that if it caused any problems he would fix it FOC, so we bought 100 litres from mackro, he added a percentage of meths I think although it may have been something else. This was to thin the oil a little for the fuel pump, I did over 300 miles with no problems, actually I think there was more power. No smell of chips and a full tank cost me about £30 ish. It is a VW LT28 2.5 TDI.

If the vat man reads this I sent off the duty money............ honestly.

older diesels will run on pretty much anything , modern common rail diesels run at very high pressure and have very fine tolerances in the pump and injectors , making them prone to expensive failures :yikes: , early mk3 mondeos were known for it :mad2:

2005 VW LT28 2.5 TDI

A great van, would never buy anything else apart from Mercedes and they make the bodies for VW anyway.

its more expensive per litre than diesel but I get better mpg and better performance if I stick a litre of cooking oil in

Does anyone have any experience of adding Cooking oil - Rapeseed to a Ford Transit Connect PS75 - same engine as the Ford Focus / Not common rail, just bog standard old style injector engine. ?

Years ago a client of my used run his passat - old and battered on pure rapeseed oil which he used to buy in 205 litres (45gall) and hand pump it to the car tank.

Used smoke like hell on start up and took a while to fire on cranking in the am. Once running it seems ok - a big slower but back in 2003 he was paying 11p / litre !

I found the same thing when running on cooking oil , took a long time to start and warm up the engine , which meant a sluggish motor for a few miles, once warmed up the engine ran well on it

I started mixing diesel through to improve that and have settled on the current mix, when i started you could buy the oil pretty cheap but over the last year it has climbed in price and is now dearer per litre than diesel, I suspect the government had a hand in this

ive also heard that the demand for bio diesel has increased the cost of the raw materials for making the oil

mines an old van with the old style diesel engine and will run on allsorts
