Hi all fellow fixers I'm a new member, hoping to share /learn about various tiling experiences/products .I'v just been to measure up for a quote to tile a patio area. The customer as just marked out the shape of the area to be tiled before his builder pours the concrete slab. The best way to describe the shape is like the 18yd box on a footy pitch (retangle with a D shape on top, area 35sqm). The tile is 1200 x 145mm wood effect porcelane from Porcelanosa has anyone laid these outside? I've told him the slab needs to be level with a fall away from the house, I know I will have to put some kind of expansion joint in as the with of this area is 8.5mtrs, but not sure if the concrete slabs expansion joint needs to be in the same place as the tiles exp/jt , can anyone shed any light on this please.
Also what adhesive/grout would you recomend? I mainly use Bal or weber floor adhesives and grouts, and I know most of them say they are suitable for exterior use, but I have only used these on small porches outside before,so not really exposed to the more extreme conditions you would get on a patio. want to be 100% sure I use the products that wont fail in 12mths time due weather etc..maybe someone as already tried and tested such aproduct.. All advise, tips, coments much appreciated.

Cheers!

John

I laid a slate pathway outside about a year or so ago.

I used Bal Rapid Set Flex and it was fine.

Once its set its frost proof etc just has to be over 5 degrees to lay the tile, but yer gonna be fine in this weather.

If there's a corner on the house where you may be tiling to, put a control joint there

Thanks for that 'white beam' but patio area to be tiled is in the centre of the rear of the house which is aprox 20mtrs long (patio 8.5 wide)...

Fred, never dot and dab, madness!!

Nuddy, make sure the addy and grout are suitable for outside, ie frostproof, flexible, waterproof.
Whitebeam makes a good point about the expansion joint though. The slab will settle differently to the house as it is pre-existing so some sort of decoupling joint, even a bead of Silicon should be left along the join with the house.

Make sure the slab is properly cured before tiling, this will give a chance to see where the cracks are and how bad they are.
Water the slab as well after pouring, helps to stop surface cracks.

Mapei keraquick is very good for outdoor use,as davy says an expansion along the wall of house would be needed, that slab will crack probably too so take your time before tilinf it.

Hi John & :welcome: to the forum:thumbsup:

I've used Mapei keraquick on outdoor jobs and had no probs:thumbsup:

Post some pics when it's done - sounds nice

i'd use weber spf rapid and silver grey grout, i'm just trying to tile a balcony at the minute when it stops raining!
