My customer has 600 x 300 black quartz tiles to go into a new extension. The joists are massive (9" x 3" and I can't detect much in the way of movement), and the flooring is T&G green chipboard. My plan is to fit Ditra down with rapidset flex then tile. But what adhesive to use. The info with the tiles says 10mm rapidset on the floor with yet more buttered on the back of the tile. This seems excessive. Another tile supplier I looked up on the interweb says use no water i.e. use a latex adhesive. They also said leave a big grout line. Any suggestions on the above?

I would overboard with Hardibacker 250, then you need to tile with a suitable adhesive for agglomerate tiles and Mapei grani-rapid is one that is suitable..

IMHO adhering direct to chipboard is a no no..

I agree. And these are dear tiles for it to go wrong on you. For me: Hardie 250 glued n screwed, tile with 2 part. Tiles back buttered. Flexy adhesive n grout throughout. Keraquick n latex for me.

Thanks Dave. Would Ditra matting be as good? Is grani-rapid a two part or just a rapidset flex? I agree - never ever tile onto chip!

What's the science behind using a 2 part for quartz? Does it bite into the surface better?

you say new extension is this a sun room ie glass conservate the heat from the sun through the glass on black quartz tiles can make the curl on the hot spots

Quartz can be water sensitive, hence using 2 part.. no water mix.. and 2 part bonds a lot better with them being resin based.

No no. This is an upstairs bedroom with an en suite bathroom. I'm to put the big quartz tiles on the floor with a mosaic tile on the "wet room" type shower tray. I think the mosaics are glass but if they too are quartz my customer may have a problem?
