Hi Guys,

I have been asked to quote for quite a large area of riven slate to be fixed outdoors. It seems that the "middleman" on this particular job reckons it should all be fixed using sand and cement.

Please can you help me out with good reasons why it shouldn't be done his way?

(The floor will likely need a screed before fixing anyway)

Thanks!

Grace's Dad - I'am with Gary on this one.

I'd want to know what the calibration (thickness variation) of the riven slate is.
If its a large variation it will be easier to level into sand/cement and ultimately cheaper than paying for waterproof adhesive.
Time wise you will be able to screed as you lay but don't forget to slurry the backs of the slate.

I'd be using a mix of 2 sharp sand and 4 soft and one cement, done a few patios with that mix and never had a problem, new a couple of brickies who laid a thick indian slate with a similar mix

To save time just buy the sacks of mortar mix like you would set brick and block with.
Works fine.
Stands up to outdoor conditions.
If you have cracks you can use expanded metal lath laid down first then your screed.
Don't forget to prime with a bonding agent rated for exterior work.
