Hi,

Re😛orcelain tiles 600x600mm black polished and plinths/skirting

Need to install 12.5 sq m of the in kitchen floor with half wooden floor boards and half cement screed.

Can anyone suggest best approach?

thanks & regards

you can either :
ply over the floorboards & ply over the screed ( plug & screw )
or
ply over the floorboards & self level over the screed

You should get away with 9mm ply & a good flexi adhesive

Probably the cost in labour & plywood for plying both areas would equal the cost of self leveller for the screed & ply over floorboards. I would self level the screed every time if customer would go for it.

Remember - polished porcelain always needs sealing before grouting - suggest the range of LTP sealants.

Ply over the lot and use flexi adhesive/grout. Seal where necessary. You will probably be wet cutting all the way, so charge accordingly.

Take the plinths out and trim with circular saw, but charge the customer as if you was cutting to the plinth. Easy peasy 🙂

Also, to make your life easier and to make more dough, why don't you suggest having a 3-4 inch porcelain skirting around the edge of the room?

Nice little earner 😉

Lucan - remember please that both options are viable - ply & self level - It's down to which you prefer or / and customer will pay for.
Choose whichever you are happy with - both work.

Thanks all, for your advice!!!

Please note that this job is for my cousin and i've had to quote very cheap. He also has had a problem with ply in his last kitchen as it made a crack in the tiles in the middle of the room because they were not screwed in properly.
If Ditra matting is used:will i need to apply self levelling compound before the ditra?

Regards

Lucas

You can tile the floor as one with an expansion strip over the join of the two if it's a straight enough line. Then use standard on the screed and flexi on the wood.

If you're using ditra, you'll need to stick that down first, you'll be able to level the screeded side if that's what you need to do first but it defeats the object if you're levelling wood I think?!?
