First job kitchen splashback

Hi all,
Got my first job starting on wednesday.
Went to see it on Saturday, it about 5sqm kitchen splashback with thge bottom part of the window to cut round.

The wall with the window has had a bond coat of plaster on it. Will I be able to skim this with rapidset when I get there and then prime it and tile onto it after 3 hours?

One wall has wallpaper on it and 2 walls have tiles on. The customer has agreed to remove all of these and get the walls as flat as possible before I start.

He hasn't got the tiles yet, but he wants small, cheap tiles so I'm expecting b and q.

I'm planning on using blue or green star adhesive and the buildfix(mapei) rapidset from b and q to do the skim, will these be ok?

Also the worktop is at two different heights so should I start with a full tile from the lower height and cut the rest?

He has also started doing the bathroom himself, but has not made a very good job of it. 300 x 300 tiles (the ones that look like mosaics but are on a big tile). He hasn't used spacers and the tiles are butted up against each other. He asked if I could finish that for him but I advised him it would be best to start again because the tiles need grout in between.
What advice can I give him for removing the tiles and getting the adhesive off the back?

sounds like fun,just watch yourself on this one with the different levels of worktops and his setting out might be garbage..so beware.

where to start

your right not to take over his tiling in the bathroom you will never get it looking right and if hes butted the tiles ............ how has he set out ................you could spend a week trying to cut and stick slithers

hack off and start again, hes probably used tub so you should be able to soak the addy off

how far out of line are the tops, if its not much you may get away with a wider mastic joint otherwise its full tile at lowest point and cutting rest

set a level batten up around the wall and tile up from that ,then remove batten and fill in lower tiles

check level of sockets too as they may need adjusting before you tile

your on the right track with the prep and addy

dont be surprised to get there and find you have to strip and prep before you start as nothing will have been done or done so badly they might as well not have bothered

if when the papers stripped its a painted finish underneath, score the surface well before tiling and wash off any old wallpaper paste. you will feel it if its there as the wall will feel rough and slightly sticky

ive worked on loads of these kind of lashups and its not a bad thing to get used to getting over them

id like to say the were diy attempts gone wrong but they are nearly always so called professionals that have lashed it up

or amatuer property developers doing it themselves to save money

take your time mate

quality over quantity

do the best job you can and take pics

dont worry too much about over running on these first few jobs as you get quicker as you go along..........its the standard of the finished job that will get you refered not the speed it was done at

watch out for those mosaic effect on solid 30 x 30 tiles, some of them dont use spacer's or very thin ones (i.e 1mm) because when you butt them together they have the same gap as the rest of the tile, and if you use spacers you can tell theres a bigger gap round the 30 x 30

There is 15-20mm difference in the level of worktop so I'll definitely have to cut the tiles.

on your split level w/top (nightmare) I'd start with a full tile on lower level, unless it's gonna leave slither cuts above/below sockets and window cill.
wouldn't touch his bathroom unless it's a start rom scratch.
