membrane
A membrane is a selective barrier; it allows some things to pass through but stops others. Such things may be molecules, ions, or other small particles. Biological membranes include cell membranes (outer coverings of cells or organelles that allow passage of certain constituents); nuclear membranes, which cover a cell nucleus; and tissue membranes, such as mucosae and serosae. Synthetic membranes are made by humans for use in laboratories and industry (such as chemical plants).
This concept of a membrane has been known since the eighteenth century but was used little outside of the laboratory until the end of World War II. Drinking water supplies in Europe had been compromised by the war and membrane filters were used to test for water safety. However, due to the lack of reliability, slow operation, reduced selectivity and elevated costs, membranes were not widely exploited. The first use of membranes on a large scale was with micro-filtration and ultra-filtration technologies. Since the 1980s, these separation processes, along with electrodialysis, are employed in large plants and, today, several experienced companies serve the market. The degree of selectivity of a membrane depends on the membrane pore size. Depending on the pore size, they can be classified as microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Membranes can also be of various thickness, with homogeneous or heterogeneous structure. Membranes can be neutral or charged, and particle transport can be active or passive. The latter can be facilitated by pressure, concentration, chemical or electrical gradients of the membrane process. Membranes can be generally classified into synthetic membranes and biological membranes.

Hello
First time poster- embarking on a wetroom project. I wonder if you can help with this first query please ... the wall area I’m going to tile will have kerdi matting but planning to also apply mapei liquid waterproofing membrane...
Has anybody purchased any of the red decoupling matting now supplied by the UnderFloorHeatingStore. For the pro grid system they previously used the xoxo one by dura. Now they’re using a red one which I’ve seen on Alibaba from Chin. Anybody even tried any of these matings from China? Is this...
Hi, I have used Kerdi membrane several times around showers but never around a bath and would like some advice please. Ill attach a pic, but my question is should the Kerdi membrane run behind the bath. I.e. the membrane fitted and then the bath installed up to it. Or is it ok to install the...
Hello all,
As i progress with my project I ran into a doubt as follows: I am currently tiling a bathroom floor. I have laid down a single coat of a liquid sealing compound (weber 822), but then decided to lay Durabase matting over this, as I believe it will work better on the different joints...
Hi all, I would appreciate some professional advice please. I have 10mm porcelain tiles for a garden front path leading to door. The path will be reinforced 120mm concrete.
I am also laying these tiles just inside the door, as this will be part of the same concrete slab, however, the tiles...
Afternoon all,
I'm currently in the middle of renovating my bathroom and I'm close to tiling the floor. I've only ever tiled a floor once and that was just onto a self leveling compound. Considering it's upstairs I've fixed a plywood subfloor down for added strength and flatness but I'm very...
Hi
I am looking to lay porcelain tiles in a bathroom with wet underfloor heating. The ufh has been commissioned. The floor is a liquid screed and the Laitance has been removed. The screed got pumped in about 4-5 months ago.
Can I tile straight on to the floor and using a primer or should I an...
Theres been a recent resurgence of projects (here in NZ) using sheet membranes and Im baffled as to why.
I am struggling to find any benefit in using them and we are losing out on jobs because it is too expensive, both in material cost, labour and time.
Some of the solvents used are also highly...
I know it has to be unmodified but which one is it? I usually use bal, and schluter says to use unmodified thin set. Which is an American term for adhesive? Thanks for the help!
I have posted on the forum before about an awful tiling job I had done several months ago.
I have found another local recognised tiler who will be redoing the work. He has recommended that I do not need the uncoupling membrane. Any thoughts on this? I am not necessarily questioning his opinion...
I'm thinking about this more and more lately, I can get codex hydrostop at a stupid price ( which is like ditra Kerdi membrane ) now when tanking a shower area rather than messing about with liquids why not just put this sheet up . Even if you use Jackoboard rather than mess about with sealing...
Considering using Schluter wall membrane and the Ditra-Heat mat on the floor.
How anal do you need to be around pipes, cables and screws that penetrate through your waterproofing layer.
I will be fitting the shower shown below with cable and pipe penetrations through the wall. I know there is...

Hello,
Looking for some advice on a very small basement shower room job I have on.
Currently stripped back to brick, drainage installed, about to receive mesh membrane to walls and floor.
What's the best product to dot and dab onto membrane to receive the tiles?
What's the best solution...
I am building a small wet room which is 900 x 1850. I am using an AKW Tuff form 900 x 1400 former so there is a 450mm gap at the end which needs to be raised to the level of the former (22mm). The former and the filler piece will be screwed down to the same sub-strait so there is limited...
Or so Bal say, here's there new membrane... I think the same system has been released in America for some time under the Ardex name.

I've lifted two cracked tiles from our wetroom floor and damaged the waterproof membrane in the process roughly - an area of 30 x 20cm. Looks like it's a Homelux product and the damaged part is right next to the waste on the former tray.
Any advice on how best to repair this making watertight...
