Do you take a deposit?

whats the matter charlie.
i took in the thread last night and tried to understand where you are coming from.
but frankly you are not contributing anything positive.
you are being confrontionable.
you are not doing yourself any favours at all .
i said last night that i think we are unique in this country having such a diverce soursce of tiling pros and that we can all learn from each other .
i am learning nothing from you right now!

I have tried to supply route quite a few times, and quite a few times I have had customers chose the "SALE" tile that I get bog all discount on. So I have picked up and delivered tiles for naff all.
It happened a few times......and I gave up. Maybe I should try again? But then again?

I don't generally ask for deposits, unless I think the customer might be at risk of messing about.

As work is getting booked up a bit further in advance though I might start doing so - it should help stop any
potential grief from last minute cancellations.

Whats the matter, Beano has continually insulted me on this forum, that is a fact! Nothing at all is wrong with me, seriously! Hey, I tell you another thing, I don't expect anyone on here to back me up against beano, this is his own little world where he feels big but hey ho, that's just where the once great TF has devolved.

I tend to send them to CTD and the just send me 15% and give them 20% suits me and befor you say it big man i know "good for you beano, that's marvellous!":lol:

If you (or anyone else for that matter), thinks they're getting grief or being insulted then report it. There is no favoritism on here I can assure you of that, everyone gets treated in the same manner and Deano can vouch for that. There are going to be fall outs but, just calling someone insulting names isn't really constructive or going to help resolve anything.

i ask for deposits on nearly all jobs regardless of size, there was a period of a month last year when iw as really busy and didnt ask a few for deposits and hey ho it raised its ugly head again and one went elsewhere and another started mucking me about so for me the deposit upfront works.

ok charlie i am not going to add anything more.
you are clearly a man in demand and on a mission and on your uppers.
good on you and best of luck .
you say you want to be taking on other tilers and with your self assurance you will live or die in a commercial world.
I set out to achieve what you want now twenty five years ago and was flying my tilers out to caribean and all over the world and paying them big money as well as myself after just six years from start up , but i think i achieved this because i was always wanting to learn and i never thought i knew everything

Well its a new thing ! ,last 4 months for me to take deposits but i had a succession well, two jobs who placed orders of over £10,000 pounds then tried to cancel, the first lot we sent there dosh -straight back after they threatened legal action and i shipt myself lol, as i already heve a problem in that department ,then i stood my ground with the next lot who were bloody solicitors , and they gave in and we did the job and got payed straight away and became good friends lol.......

alright john . you know my little story about south africa and only taking a 12.50 % deposit.
one of the biggest mistakes i ever made but im still trading !!!

thanks for for the advice. Life is good but I go on habits where I come on here then quickly realise why I stayed away. It can be good in small doses but it does not bring me penny. I live in the real world, learning from my mistakes and yes one day I will hopefully employ other tilers. I sincerely hope I have not caused anyone on here any unrest but I have one rule in life, I would never say anything on here or any other social site that I would not say in real life. Having said that, the forum at times does have good banter and I wish everyone all the best

We need to speak to Phil, apparently he doesn't ask for deposits, he just leaves them :sofahide:

Only joking Phil if you read this!!!

We do not take a deposit for our jobs.

However, my forte is ensuring that we receive payment for materials when delivered to site and staged payments on completion of areas.

Credit control is becoming even more important.

Best Wishes

Anne

Always take a deposit but then on most jobs we are supplying high value items, so kitchens and bathrooms are paid for anywhere 3-8 weeks in advanced. Already making a healthy profit on the supply so not overly fussed if they cancel, which almost never happens if they have already parted with thousands of pounds. Don't really take deposits on small labour only jobs lasting a couple of days as they are normally squezzed in between other work anyway, so can 9 times out of 10 fill the time with other jobs.

If I was just supplying labour and not getting involved in material supplying (I mean materials in high value stuff not everyday sundries) then I think I would ask for a small non-returnable deposit 4 weeks before hand to guarantee their spot in the diary. Not a lot but enough for them not to want to lose. Say job value £1K-£2K = £200 deposit, £2k-£5k = £400, £5k-£10K = £600, once you start getting in to £15k + labour only charge you want to have a contract in place anyway which gives you right to chase out of pocket expenses if the cancel
