Surface preparation

I have just removed tiles from my bathroom walls and have ended up with a right mess. Some tiles came away with all the plaster leaving exposed render. Other tiles left bare plaster and the rest (most) of the tiles left generous amounts of adhesive on the walls. I have stripped away any unsound plaster back to render and propose building up the exposed render (with Bal rapid render) to level out with the surrounding old plaster. And have started to remove the adhesive left after tile removal ( sweat!!) to be left with a reasonable level surface. I would just like some confirmation that the finished result would be ok to tile on. Would you suggest priming the bare plaster areas as well? Anything else I need to do ? Thanks.

as long as the old plaster is sound and you think you can render the surface to a reasonable flatness, all well and good. Prime the lot once done!

Go around tapping all areas where you are leaving the old render in place and make sure it is not become parted from brick work. It will be easy to spot as it will sound more hollow than fixed areas and vibrate. It may have been fine before the disturbance caused by removing the tiles but now may be unsafe to start securing heavy tiles to. No viration = sound parent material. If in doubt seek advice.

If you are happy with the level of the walls then crack on. If not then apply render where neccessary.

If in doubt always prime.

Thanks Homefront. Did as you advised and found some small areas of unsound render which I will remove and repair.

Many thanks, I have bought Bal (Grip) ready mixed wall adhesive & some Bal primer but most likely will need more primer. Mapei primers seem cheaper than Bal. Any reason why the Mapei equivalent primer should not be used as a preparation for Bal adhesive.

Never used Bal Grip, but is it not self priming? All the tubbed gear i've used has been.
