the space has to be squared up as is in old property, as the existing surround is sand and cement rendered i wondered whether thistle hardwall would be ok, if to be tiled onto also. ??????

If it is rendered then that is perfect as it is, if it isn't very flat then skim the wall in with rapid set to flatten... then tile with same adhesive...

the surfaces were very very uneven and was asked to do this job as a plasterer to straighten the surfaces and plumb the angles for tiling. if this was done with a backing plaster such as thistle hardwall and then tiled over would this be ok?

Line it with heat resistant board e.g. Cement backer or plasterboard, mechanically fixed not just glued. Then tile onto that.

By the way my Rayburn is backed with bonding coat plaster finished with thistle multi.

Also bear in mind that if it is a modern Rayburn or aga the outside doesn't get that hot because they are well insulated due to efficiency regulations.
