You could be right Mike, they are a little bit fat too... come out over edges a little.

they look handy that you can just change the sponge and not throw the whole thing away

I use Genesis washboy sponges, just cos it's easy to swap sponges (on account they are fixed by velcro to handle), but I don't believe they are any cheaper than the pre-glued units so will probably be switching sponge / units soon.
