Tanking

When your doing a wet room, with ufh, do you tank the room, then lay wires then slc then tile,
Or
Do you lay the wires and slc, then tank and tile,

I'm interested to see which way folks do it

I struggle with the concept of tanking beneath ufh in a wet area.
To me that's backwards.
why would you put anything on top of tanking other than the final finish or a waterproof membrane.
Unless you're covering the ufh and slc with a waterproof membrane.

I always tank the floor as the last surface to be worked on prior to tiling

My theory is that ufh over tanking means that at some point somewhere in the room you will have to compromise the tanking for the sake of the ufh. Plus not all tanking is suitable for ufh on top. My take on it anyhow

I'd always uncouple as close to the tile as I could. I have latexed over it before but not something I normally do

Yep. That said it's only been a handful of times this has occurred. It's rare that I come across stone in wet areas and if using porcelain and the floor is solid I wouldn't uncouple

The only time you need to chop into the floor for probe etc is always well out of the wet zone. I'm open to being educated!

In reality, there is no right or wrong way with regards to where in the process of building up the layers a tanking solution can be applied. We would normally advise to tank first, being that the substrates are tanked prior to a tiling installation being installed over the top.

That is not to say however, that tanking above the UFH and self levelling compound and directly underneath the tile is an incorrect tanking method. Essentially the room is tanked and ready to accept the demands that will be put upon it.

I'm sure that in the vast majority of circumstances, the UFH would be being applied to a tilebacker board (such as Delta, Wedi, Jackon, Marmox etc) that are themselves a form of tanking once the joints have been taped/tanked, so in this instance, the UFH and self levelling compound would be being applied to the surface.

With regards to an uncoupling membrane/mat, this should always be applied as close to the tiled surface as possible. If an uncoupling membrane is being installed as a dual uncoupling/tanking system, then we would advise this is installed as close to the tiled surface as is possible for the uncoupling aspect to work fully.
