Laying 600 x 600. Advice please. - Tile Advice

hey guy, nxt week i am laying 600 x 600 tiles in my living room,
the floor is 18m2 and is concrete,

just wondering how you guys would approach it??

It depends on the shape of the room, number of doorways etc. Do you have any pictures of the room?

Its mostly best to centre the room both ways and walk or dry lay the tiles to the edges of the room to make sure they fit. You centre the room, so you have the same cut either side, both ways. This of course can be adjusted somewhat if you need to.

Once the centre has been found and eveything fits, ping a chalkline down the length of the room, making sure its straight and centred to your mark. Start laying tiles off this line, starting at your mark you made.

Plan where you are tiling, as you dont want to tile yourself into a corner

Probably 10mm notch or bigger. Addy is dependant on what type of concrete really. May need priming first, or levelling.

Have you checked the floor with a straight edge? The flat-er the floor, the easier the tiling.

In a living room i would centre on the main feature.ie a fireplace.its mostly in middle of wall but tiles look well centred on it.you could even do field tiles on the 45 and border with half tiles etc.looks well when well done.

thanks guys, i have a 10mm round notch rubi, would that do the job??

am getting keys to house tomorrow then ill check the floor??

the door is in the middle of the room, how do i work to that if its in the middle and not the corner??

Use fast set adhesive and you can walk on them in 40mins.

#1 If the floor is flat, 10mm is fine.

#2 Check the floor for humps and low spots. Put a very long level or straight edge over it in various places, and look under it for high and low spots. If its bad, I would try latexing the floor flat before you tile it. Trust me, its easier this way. If you need latexing advice, ask.

#3 Again start by marking the floor in the centre both width and length. Then dry lay a few to see what sort of cut you get into the door way, and the edges of the room. If its not quite right, adjust the centre line slightly, and check again. Personally, and it is only personal opinion, floors looks better with the same cut either end of the room.

i have a 2m spirit level, is that a long enough straight edge??

I would look at putting a centre line form the middle of the door to the opposite wall. This way you would have a grout line running from the middle of the door to the opposite wall or a full tile centered on the door running to the wall. Looks better this way IMO because you'll be drawn to it every time you enter the room. As Joe said, you should also consider using other features such as the fireplace to center your tiles. Personal preferance really. Don't rush the setting out process, try a couple of options and see what looks best.
