Hi there,
I am a new member and want to ceramic tile my kitchen floor 15 sm, I have done a fair bit of tiling both for myself and other people but never floors, after reading advice on the net I seem to be a bit bogged down, this is my understanding.
1. fit min 12mm ext ply to floor and screw down every 300mm (But do I prime the chip board or just the under side of the ply or both and with what, acrylic primer?)
2. should I leave an expansion joint/space around the perimeter of the ply (as you do with laminate flooring to allow movement), cos if I don't won't the ply rise if it can't expand.
3. What is the best adhesive bal fastflex or bal rapid set flexi and do i need to use balbond.
4. What is the best grout to use, bal wide joint or bal flex and do i need to mix GTI with the correct choice.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, yes 12mm ply, underside of ply with acrilic primer, yes have expansion joint around edge. If its your first floor i wouldnt use a rapid set use a normal set flexible and a flexible grout and silocone around the edges.

No need to prime the chipboard....screw ply every 200mm ...leave 5mm expansion all round perimeter and 2/3mm between boards.Rapid or sinle part flex will be ok but only guaranteed by supplier if 18mm.Two part fastflex would be my choice...standard wide joint grout of chosen colour with GT1 polymer....Gaz

Hi Gaz,

Understand about the chipboard but I would still need to prime the ply?, and can you advise of the spread rate of the Two part fastflex.

Bal prim APD onto ply and fastflex 8kg powder and bottle of polymer will cover 3.5 metres approx...Gaz

When you go and purchase the fastflex............have someone stand behind you to catch you. Its expensive stuff, and people generally nearly fall over with shock:wink_smile:

If you have trade account with Topps the trade alternative is Toppfix 2 part for £19........Gaz
