How to finish travertine corners and what colour grout? - TilersForums.com

My tiler has currently got white metal edging strips tacked up (unfinished job) as shown in photo below. Is this the best way to finish travertine external corners? It doesn't look great to my eye...

Also struggling with grout colour. I had thought white. The tiler has recommended ivory because he has a concern about the white sitting in any dips in the tiles. I then wondered if jasmine is better so it matches the filled areas. Any thoughts?

It's not getting any better is it? I suspect most of the guys on here would have mitred the external corner with travertine, possibly bullnosed it.

Thanks pdc. Looks like I'm going to have to find a new tiler. I'm pretty sure my current one won't be up to the job of mitres/bullnoses seeing as he can't even cut a straight line.

For your entertainment: he originally suggested white plastic trim.

No trims with natural stone. Butt joint the corner and polish the edge to match the face, and shape to desired look.
They also look dot and dabbed on.

Localtiler - please explain about your dot and dab comment. I know that's really bad and I'm worried but I can't see it. How can you tell?

Well, I can’t see any adhesive or trowel lines between the tiles or in corners etc, which either means a very clean and carful worker, or a dot and dabber.

bullnose would be the ideal, but a soft mitre or butt joint would be preferable to a trim imo

With honed (not polished) trav, I would use silicone carbide pads on a soft backer to smooth off the externals. I find bullnosing cheaper trav always ends up shiny and holey!
(It must be 5yrs since I had my hands on travertine)

But joint and polish edges for me. Try mapai upc limestone grout should work ok with those tiles.

Definately no trim with natural stone, like the guys said should be mitred/bullnosed/polished edges.
