Goldtrowel is the UKs No.1 NVQ Centre for tile Courses. It is our responsibility to instill confidence in all that you achieve and learn throughout your course.

Goldtrowel NVQ Level 2 Wall and Floor tile Courses are FULL ON Intensive Courses, Hands On and Practical Courses.

By taking your NVQ Level 2 wall and floor tile course at Goldtrowel you will be fully trained in Wall & Floor tile and you can be assured the 3 weeks will be full and intense to help you gain the knowledge, skills and confidence you will need to acheive an NVQ Level 2. We pride ourselves in our exceptional high standards.

Initially this course is a 3 week Advanced Wall & Floor tile Training Course. If you fit the following criteria you could be eligible for the funding, if available at time of booking, and will be registered for your NVQ :

- 19 years or older

- have lived in the UK for more than 3 years

- self employed or employed in construction

- Do not hold any other NVQ`s or 5 x GCSE grades 1-3 or equivalent

If you do not fit the above criteria then the cost of the additional NVQ qualification will be £650 (normally £1295.00)

These qualifications (NVQs /QCF) focus on practical skills and knowledge. Developed and approved by people who work in the industry, they are a great way to get into construction or to boost your career by developing new skills and knowledge through the assessment of work based competence.

This course will act as your underpinning knowledge to progress you to achieving an NVQ Level 2 in Wall & Floor tile once you are working in the Industry. The next step is to just let us know when you would like to progress to this stage; we will then allocate you an assessor who will help and guide you from beginning to end while you gather evidence for your portfolio.

This intensive wall and floor tile tile course is entirely hands on and you will develop tile skills which will give you the confidence and knowledge to attempt tile tasks after you have left the Centre. We also offer full aftercare support on complettion of your training. We have a maximum of 8 persons at any time on the tile course, each student will be allocated there own bay/room, all tools and materials are supplied whilst on your course.

You will see that we have clearly displayed " lesson plans" so you know what training you will be receiving during whatever course you choose to undertake.

Introduction into tile (Learning to tile)

Week 1

5 day Wall and Floor tile training course, a introduction to tools, H&S, Adhesives, Trowels, Backgrounds, Tiles, Fixing techniques, Trim, Borders, Grouting, Setting out, mastics, you will be applying the above to walls and floors, plus explanations and demonstrations on Tanking systems and under floor heating.

Breakdown of our 1 week 5 day course

  • Introduction
  • Preparation, types & characteristics of backgrounds / substrates
  • Service conditions


Monday - Friday

  • Learn Setting out your tile work.
  • Explaining all the different adhesives used for different surfaces.
  • Demonstrating all the tools required.
  • Cutting tiles using wet tile cutters, dry tile cutters, tile scribes, tile snips and tile saws. Explaining tile involving Borders, Diamonds and Patterns.
  • How to cut around windows and reveals.
  • How to cope with tile difficult areas such as uneven walls.

You will learn in depth all the uses of the following:-

  • Nippers / Scribers / Twin rail manual / Electric wet

Week 2:

Monday - Friday

  • Advanced training, building on our first week tackling bigger areas, and covering more in-depth and working area, incorporating complete bathroom and kitchen obstacles, covering extra skills such as complex patterns, Natural stones, Levelling compounds, pricing etc, and much more!!


Week 3

NVQ tile Training(Floor screeding and rendering a wall included in this week)

Listed below are the compulsory units required to achieve your NVQ level 2 in Wall & Floor tile.

QCF 641 Conform to General Workplace Safety

This unit is about:

  • Awareness of relevant current statutory requirements and official guidance.
  • Personal responsibilties relating to workplace safety, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with warning/safety signs.
  • Personal behaviour in the workplace.
  • Security in the workplace.
QCF 642 Conform to Efficient Work Practices

  • This unit is about interpreting information; planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices; planning and carrying out productive, efficient working practices; working with others or as an individual.

QCF 643 Move and Handle Resources

  • This unit is about following instructions; adopting safe and healthy working practices; selecting materials, components and equipment; handling, moving and storage of materials and components by manual procedures and lifting.

QCF 141 Prepare Backgrounds for tile

  • This unit is about: interpreting information , adopting safe and healthy working practices , selecting materials, components and equipment , preparing new and/or existing solid and manufactured board backgrounds to receive wall and/or floor tile.

QCF 142 Tile Wall and Floor Surfaces

  • This unit is about: interpreting information , adopting safe and healthy working practices , selecting materials, components and equipment , laying wall and floor tiles to vertical, horizontal and inclined surfaces

I'm torn between 2 courses at the moment..

#GoldTrowel or #ProTiling
3 week course with gold trowel and/or 9 days with pro tile...

Anyone been to this goldtrowel before? It does seem like it caters more for plasterers, bricklayers though...

Did my nvq at gold trowel, I'd say it was worth it, the tutor is an old school tiler who certainly knows his stuff. Found all the information useful and developed skills as a beginner tiler from setting out to different cutting methods. However the centre is located in the middle of no where which was an issue for some of the other students.
They are a centre that cater for plastering, Bricklaying and tile so we did a bit of screeding and making good of the walls too which was interesting

I did uk pro tile, the amount of information and advice was unbelievable, and the training and help to start on your own was the best I found as well as the after course help

Ive made my mind up, I spoke to Tracey today who was so helpful, and a lovely lady... After reading all the excellent reviews on a pro tile and speaking to Tracey, I'm going with my gut feeling & I've just booked my train tickets to go up north in July. Cant wait!!! Exciting times ahead.. thanks all for your info and advice, see you on the other side

Information above about us is out of date, please see our website for full details, we have been training and assessing Wall and Floor tile since 2002, we do have reviews on our website, who can be contacted for reference, our training is conducted in real bathrooms with real walls as found in domestic houses.
