I started up my tiling and plastering company bout 4 months ago, got alot of work through a builder m8, who was douing alot of houses at the time, work was good as well seemed to get along fine, was getting alot of calls aswell.
Since I have finished, work has slowed right down advertising in the local paper and doing leflet drops but work is very slow. Alot of small jobs nothing decent, any ideas guy on how to keep steady work coming through the door?:mad2:

Brian, search the threads on here. There have been some cracking posts in the past.

For me its all about word of mouth, taking the time to do a quality job for a fair price. Be punctual and tidy. Takes time to build a reputation though.

Hi Brian

Thanks for letting us know where you are. From talking to the various members located around the UK, Scotland is one of the areas that seems to be struggling for tiling work at the moment.

As davy G says, there are some excellent threads and posts on here about marketing your business and finding new customers and opportunities, so do some searching and see what you come up with.

Please don't be put off though. Lots of tilers and fixers have been in the same position as you this year, so it's just a case of sticking it out and using some shoe leather to drum up busines.

:welcome: to the best tiling forum in the world too

brian :welcome:to the forum,i think you have to be well known and established, and this takes years of work sorry m8 & it can be all distroyed in a few bad jobs so hange in there and be careful

:welcome:to the forum, work has been pretty slow during the summer months but it does look like it is picking up,no doubt the phone will start ringing soon with people wanting stuff done for xmas(sorry for swearing lol)

Yea thanks for the comments guys, had a fair bit this week so hopefully things will pick up:thumbsup:

That's good news Brian. Stick with it; it won't be long until we're out of the recession and people will start spending again.

Advertising, Advertising, Advertising mate,

Get your walking boots out and get flyers through doors, get into your suppliers and kitchen and bathroom places and ask them for work.

Im not a fan of advertising in the local rag, its usually expensive and because of the current climate there are usually loads of competitors in too.

Always always go the extra mile to make sure your getting reccommended, even if it means you stay an hour longer vacuming every carpet you've walked on, people will always notice and remeber the things you do that they werent expecting, and they'll use it as a talking point,

:thumbsup:persimmon...my m8 worked for them for a few years(FORKLIFT)got paid off about a year ago and got taken back on this week..they have started selling houses again.

just keep at it mate also get yourself listed in FREE FREE FREE internet listing websites. i get about 1 - 5th of my jobs of there

Brian, there is no magic formula i'm afraid. I had a very slow start, then it picked up because I got a job with a tiler as he wanted some work done in London. He advertised for someone on this site and I did several jobs for him. I also kept popping into Topps Tiles, even buying the odd tub of addy to give the impression I was busy! You get to know the staff after a while and your card gets given out a bit more than the others. Advertising in papers and local parish mags did nothing for me. Tile shops and bathroom shops have worked for me. I got one job from a free advert on 'askyourneighbour.co.uk' Good luck & cheers Sean

My missus works for persimmon, she's been looking for a new job for ages until about 2 months ago when the houses started shifting like hot cakes, she's sold loads which is great cos she gets around £600 per sale :hurray::hurray:
