If that is what your tiler calls acceptable and within his personal parameters of quality then I do not think he will attempt to resolve your issues and best outcome would be to get all monies paid to him refunded, IMO best to rip up and start again with replacement tiles, not good but will never be or look right so take the hit now and move on, feel for you.

@callatiler it’s laid over wet overboard UFH so I’d be worried that would be damaged. Can’t afford to buy new tiles and pay another tradesman so will need to live with it. Will be looking for a reimbursement though, you reckon the full what is due back?

Yes full refund and tell him he is lucky you are not pursuing cost of tiles he has used.

The other tiler came out and was appalled at what he saw. He’s suggested raking out the grout and putting in a darker colour to try and hide the shadowing from the lippage. He’s also suggested smashing out some of the extremely poor tiles in the areas that will see the most traffic, since these will bother us the most, which is sensible advice. Finally he’s given advice on how to take this further in terms of a claim.

Original tiler has finally responded to say he will come out tomorrow. Unfortunately we’re both working, so have asked for wed but no response.

What’s my angle if he does ever show up? I’ve asked that he come and rectify the grout since that seems like the easiest part and he had essentially already agreed to - thought with that angle he’d at least show up. Trouble is the whole thing is a mess and I’m smarting from it, but ultimately want to claim money back. Just don’t want to put myself in a worse or same position.

I have a feeling I’m not getting any money back, he’ll either say no, or yes then never hear from him again. I’m gutted. OH and I have decided that if we’re totally conned with no come back we’ll need to live with it for 5 years or so then get the full lot ripped up and redone when we have some more money saved.

I have read through all of this and tried to make my opinion as objective as possible....YES the floor could've been tricky once he started, YES cheap tiles can bow, and the differential already mentioned would suggest this as a possibility....but the standard of the finished floor is miles away from being to an acceptable standard (this doesn't help you much at this stage I know!) and the state of the grouting is amateurish at best, and I mean at best! Throw into the mix tiles with 3 breaks in them.....there is no where to hide for our man.

Are we allowed to ask who the culprit it or have i missed that bit?

Your first port of call should be to get clear and concise advise on what your rights are and I would do it ASAP just in case there is any potential to miss things due to time line etc

You should also trawl through texts and emails to see what you can pick out from him that may help at this stage.

I am sure we have all opted for the cheaper option at some point in our lives, but you have been well and truly let down by this plank.

Ok, from the new pictures you have posted, its quite clear that despite the tiles having a slight bow and dodgy corners, this tiling has been done to a poor standard so I guess you give him the opportunity to rip it up and re-do or give you a full refund for the works done. If you go down the small claims road, you will have to show that you gave him a chance to put it right but I have to say there is a fair chance he'd do it to the same standard again! Must of been a bit awkward calling the original tiler back after he didn't get the job because of the price? I wish you the best of luck with this, not a nice situation at all.

I’ve spoken with CAB and they advised the same, however I don’t have an address for him so I would struggle when it comes to small claims. I think I might have found the details on 192.com but they’re asking for £15 to release these to me. Not wanting fleeced again, anyone any idea if the info they give is reliable? If I can get the address I can send a recorded letter which Stands me in much better stead.

I don’t know if I can stomach a rip up and redo, I certainly don’t have money for the new tiles. And I don’t really want work done again by this *** hat. ☠️

Spend a bit more time on 192.com searching in different ways. Each search usually brings up another bit of information to add to the puzzle. Google his phone number as well.

We lost touch with some friends after they had moved, if I remember rightly we used the voting register to find them but had to pay £10 for the pleasure.

Get another phone . Phone the guy up and arrange to me him in a different part of town to look at a job . Obviously giving a different name , and he will come to you .

He’s a big guy and I’m a not very large lass! Not sure I want to set him up
@Andy Allen i’ve found out a fair about of (unsavoury) info online about this guy since the incident - his personal life isn’t hidden, his address is another matter though, i think il need to pay the fee and move things along now

Maybe if you need to serve papers you could use this approach . I never have a anybody do work in my house unless I think I can knock them out in a straight fight . Consequently I have to do all the work in my house .

That was the original plan JC, but we just folded under the pressure of one room living. Everything else is being done by me and the other half, and we’re really enjoying it! I’m sure I’d have enjoyed learning all about tiling too, can’t have done a worse job than this guy
