These seem to have become very popular over the last few months, split faced mosaic tiles are one of the most popular but, can be very expensive, in some cases £100+ per m2. The photos in this example are from my own house, I used 300x300mm sheera slate and cut it into 50mm strips and then random lengths. The stone for this wall cost £120, obviously quite labour intensive putting each piece on individually but, if you can afford the time, a hefty saving. Maybe not the type of job a DIYer might take on but, I thought I'd show a few photos of the job.

you must have the patience of a saint Bri... looks good though..

I did it on and off for about a year, lol. I reckon from start to finish it probably took 5 days, I like the look of split a faced slate but I don't like all the lipping, it just seems wrong to me, that's why I chose to do it this way.

 Dogs veg Bri.

just shown it to the wife.........I fancy doing similar, but she who must be obeyed needs convincing. Or I'll do it when she goes to Scotland to see her family???

if you do decide to do it mate, make life easy for yourself and get some calibrated slate! This varied from 5-15mm so needed grading for each course, everyone who comes to visit comments on it, no negative remarks yet, well not to my face anyway

been thinking of doing same in my bathroom Bri, obviously more labour intensive than pre-made ones but another bonus would be that I could do away with the really narrow joints that come with the ones on the mesh.

I think most of the split faced can't be grouted Doug, so this way fixes that issue for a wet area.

Top job there Bri, good tip as well
That looks really smart.
just given me an idea about doing my garden wall with off cuts of limestone from church job I'm doing now.trouble is they're all in the skip. Will have to hook them out
