i know about maximum weight holds of walls, but trying to get it through to the client is hard. is it worth considering putting natrual stone slate 15*300*10mm and large format tiles aswell over tiled walls already or is it a recipe for disaster thanks

in a word yes

I know its hard in these times but if they wont take professional advice then walk away

its your reputation thats at stake

I had to do it earlier this year and I was desperate for the job:thumbsup:

Tile over tile isn't a good idea anyway but with stone you are asking for real trouble. You would be needing to look at a minimum of sand/cement render or a good quality backerboard to take the weight and even then you are relying on the fact that the tiles underneath are securely fixed in the first place. Walk away mate is my advice!

ive only ever done tile on tile with thin ceramics and wouldnt really consider doing it with stone its a recipe for disaster especially with the weight, try and make the customer see why it may go wrong....if they can afford a stone installation a few days re prepping the room properly shouldnt be an issue for them

If they want a fully tiled room I would tell them that this method could be a safety hazard.

That may knock some sense into them. If the existing tiles show weakness on checking them, give them a demonstration. :blush2:

Be friendly throughout Ray. I find that if you can get them on your side you have a much better chance of influencing them to listen to your 'professional' advise.

You must stress the saftey aspect and potential cost if this method fails.
If that doesn't convince them mikethetiles comment stands.
Politely decline but leave them your card and a quote for doing the installation correctly.

I have a hunch your phone will ring again after a few cowboys visit. All the best!!

As said Ray, the customers seem to want to save themselves money but don't look any further than there nose and can't see the consequences

Ray - I agree with the sentiments of all the answers so far - If you tile stone on to existing tiles, then the adhesive thats holding the existing tiles to wall will have to hold the tiles and the stone and the cement adhesive you apply between the two !

I would tell them that on grounds of safety and your profesional experience you cannot undertake to install stone using that method - Think about your EL/PL Insurance - If something goes seriuosly wrong and someone / something is injured or santitary ware damaged your ins underwriters will not pay out - That's very serious indeed.

Do it right or not at all
