Use the wife's car, although that normally ends up costing more than hiring a van in the long run...

Why don't you start a "What new van should I get and how shall I finance it?" thread?

Used to hire a van . But at the moment we got a 53 plate freelander sat on the drive for taking stuff to the dump and van back up .

My battery packed in a couple of weeks ago, just completely dead, wouldn't even power the dash clock. Managed to bump start and get to garage 3 miles away. My plumber came with me and then took me back to pick it up at 5.

I've been pretty lucky though, only ever had one serious problem when the engine management failed on my last van, so I sold it to a guy who exports vans to Africa and they fix them out there, and I just got a new one.

A few years ago I had to borrow my dear old mother's car to get to a wet room job I was working on when 2 of my Vivaro injectors decided to die. Luckily nearly all of my kit was already at the job. Fitting a DeWalt D24000 and 6 bags of addy into a 5 door Mitsubishi colt should really be one of those adverts you used to see in the 80's.

I'm going to have to pile my kit into the wife's ford focus tomorrow.
Then drop the van at the garage..
Then drop her off at work..
Then go to my job....
Then go back to the van to get the one piece of kit that you need and left on there...(it always happens).
Then finish my job....
Then Pile everything back in the focus....
Then Pick the wife up...
Then get the van... If ready.... If not then repeat again...

Really is a nightmare...... It's like loosing your legs...

It’s always a pain, but depending on the job and situation with carrying tools etc. I usually just take the camper van, plenty of room in there
