This might have already been asked/answered so I apologize in advance. I'm tiling over a coffee table that I built. The material is a sanded/sealed plywood. The table will be outdoors (winter in Iowa...it does get to below freezing).
The question is whether I need to use a concrete backer board?

I've done a number of indoor tiling projects where I have used backer boards to ensure the tiles don't shift and they've worked out great. Just not sure if there is a need for one on a wooden table top. Any help? Thanks in advance.

Yes, I would use backer board. The plywood isn't suitable for tiling directly onto. It might suck all the moisture out of your adhesive and it will expand and contract in the hot and cold, whereas the backerboard will be more stable.
