Hey everyone. I'm working on a wood burning insert installation project at my house here and have a question about tiling for you guys.

I'm wondering if I can tile directly over this firebrick? Mortar didn't seem to stick to it too well so that's why I'm wondering if I need to install some steel framing and cement board for the tile. I would probably first do a skim coat of mortar (recommendations?) to level the brick out and let that set before tiling. Tile is a 3/8" marble honeycomb pattern sheet.

Thanks for your help!
James
