Tiling a 2 m radius circular floor - ideas?

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

I am carrying out procurement for a self build house.
The staircase is circular, and my husband has drawn (CAD) a symmetrical pattern of tiles with concentric circles divided into segments, for tiling the floor of the stairwell. The radius of the stairwell is 2 meters.
If this were a patio, I could buy a kit of pre-cut stones. I cannot find anything like this in floor tiles.
Does anyone have experience of tackling anything like this? If so, do you have any practical ideas?
Frances

I prefer porcelain, but am open to suggestions if this is not practical. There are no external entrances nearby and there will be low levels of wear except at the bottom step of the stairs.

I have done this very successfully with polished porcelain using an angle grinder, diamond pad. The results where as good as water jet cutting. You need to dry lay your tiles then mark off where you want to cut, (use masking tape) then with a good quality blade on your grinder. Make one continued pass 1mm deep across all the tiles (don't stop) then lift each tile and make several passes with grinder untill cut is achieved. Then dress with grinder and diamond pad

You can do it with any tile really , cut all tiles to size as per spec in your drawing, then dress any edges to remove the arris , i like the look of easing the edges , this will give a uniform look when grouting..

Maybe you can post a pic of the design your are wanting to achieve .. would be good to see what you have to do .

Thank you Charlie. I need that level of detail and helpful information.

Thank you Dave for your reply. I'm sorry to have to ask, but what do you mean by easing the edges? I too am in favour of a uniform look especially with porcelain.
I will see if I can get a picture too>

Thank you for the link CJ. I think the area is too large to do with mosaics, but the link gives some alternative ideas for designs, which might prove simpler i.e. reduce the total amount of cutting and also attractive.:2thumbsup:

By this i mean a micro chamfer , which is common on porcelain tiles... when done right you cannot see the tile was cut ... bespoke work that looks good..
