Anyone leaving them in?
I know they can cause tension, grout color fading and can attract mold. But are these any better?

They support tension and also allows grouting over, or should they be removed?

I think they would compress anyway if you used them as pegs.
I don't leave spacers in, and I use them on floors always, unless fixing really bad tiles, then it's by eye.
