I'm removing wall kitchen tiles for the first time, been told to use an angle grinder on the grout then bang out with bolster and hammer but alot of noise and smoke and sparks is that normal? and the tiles dont seem to come out easier anyway am i doing something wrong?

I don't know who said to use a grinder mate...more dust than a sandstorm...just use a bolster chisel and hammer and hope for the best....sometimes they just pop off. then sometimes they don't....then you have to patch the walls...good luck...

I've never had to use more than a small boster and normal hammer on kitchens.

One I stripped out yesterday took all of 10 minutes (really!)

6 meters off in a flash. Turned out that the original paint had been put onto unprimed walls so off came the tiles with the adhesive with two layers of paint - leaving nice fresh, clean plaster. (yes I primed it!)

I was pulling off 6x6 tiles in sheets, literally 12 at a time.

So glad the customer was out. When she came home: "you got that done quickly!"

God, you'd be there for days doing it that way.

As the guys say, hammer and bolster.

I used a multitute of methods

1. Pulling the loose tile off - this will be easy

2. Using a scraper - this will be easy

3. Using a scraper and a hammer - still fairly easy
4. Using a bolster and lump hammer - now it's hard:thumbsdown:

5. Using a chisel action drill - ah it's easy again

Then removing what seemed like 100's of rubble sacks downstairs to car - hard work.

trying not to keep getting the same chap at the tip

and the sad part, surveying what was left of the walls.

All done in the end - but don't underestimate the time and disruption of removing tiles from a wall!

Factor it in on a quote and stress the work involved to the customer.
Lesson learnt

thanks for info, i've put the grinder to the side and just used a hammer and a paint scaper and they have all come off fine but i've damaged the plasterboard in several locations from an inch to 3 inches holes should i just fill the holes with adhesive or do i need to do something else?

Hi jonty

I think you will be okay with what you have done

To be honest before my training I did it all wrong but nothing has ever fell off

Some of the threads in the tiling forum that have had a lot of views are being bumped up into current discussion. Just walk on by if it's not your flavour right now. Perhaps it'll help somebody out one day, and they become members, and then they post a thread, and professional tilers respond, and then you learn something from them...? Maybe?
