Which is the best place near preston? Just rung Lancashire school of trades and might go with them.

Have a look on the feedback pages on here and you might just change your mind when you do
Go for the tried, tested and trusted centres, even if you have to travel, too many people have wasted hundreds on courses just because they are close to them

Thanks for your advise mate. My mate said to me to work with a tiler first and then do a course so i don't have to pick up as much and find it easier. Better knowing something than nothing. The problem with this is i don't know if i can find someone to work with.
Another thing is if i can watch a dvd or something first but it's better to do it practically. I'll give Preston place a miss.

DVD tiling is crap, just gives the diy tiling guide really and absolute basics, tells you nothing about proper setting out, backgrounds, adhesives primers etc, where a good course will be very well structured and get the info over to you.

Trying to find a tiler to work with i would say is the best learning really, out in the real world, trouble is you wont find one, i used to get loads of offers for free help, two reasons why i never took anyone on.
1, you just educate someone that will be your competition
2, they are more of a hinderance than a help really as you have to keep checking what theyve done and in a punters house doesnt look good

So that leaves the courses, my course has been the longest running course on the forums and has stood the test of time with countless positive feedback, i prefer someone with no experience really to come to the course then i can load the correct info straight into you, my methods are different from the normal but delivers top results at rapid speeds as anyone thats done my course will tell you, its not until you finish the 5 days, look back and just be amazed at how much info you have taken in and understood and look back at the quality of your bespoke tiling work, full business comes with it as well so your clear what your direction is after leaving as well.

If you can, this would be the best time to try and find someone to tag along with, as said before the learning never stops out in the real world, but at least you will have a good idea of whats right and wrong

Thanks again mate. I'll be coming to your place soon. Is there any good accomodation and is it near any train station? what best way to come by public transport from Preston?
Some questions about your other courses:
(1) Is the bathroom installation course for 1 day enough to be able to be a little confident to install a bathroom?
(2)Do you do kitchen fitting course?
(3)what are your plastering and decorating courses like?
(4) which course has the main demand?

Hi Mate,
Darren is right about crap DVD's-just go to your nearesr B+Q and buy their Tiling DVD,its only a couple of quid.You'll soon see that its only useful for really basic jobs!!!!
He's also correct about checking out established training centre advocated by forum members.

Hi Mate
Our training centre is easy to get to by any method of transport, you can get the train straight to Newcastle central station, then hop on the metro train from the same station straight down to the last stop, south shields (20 min ride) the training centre is a 5 minuit walk from the metro stop to the left, and the accommodation is a 5 minuit walk from the stop to the right so really easy, you cant go wrong

Im just about to anounce some changes, im scrapping the decorating courses, not enough demand for it, and im just about to do a full tilers / plasterers bathroom installation plumbing course for 4 - 5 days which will be starting shortly instead, the 1 day bathroom covers the info but really needs to be the 4 or 5 days so you can get plenty hands on practice putting in all the sanitary ware and taking it in and out so your really confident to do it in the punters house plus the ins and outs of how different water systems work, im just going through the interview process to find a plumbing teacher worthy of delivering the course, soon as i do, it will start

Multi skilled is definatly the way forward and i know that for a fact now, the customer wants 1 person in to do the jobs and that person will get all three, so all the courses i do now will enable you to do just that, take out the sanitary, plaster if needed then do the tiling then replace the sanitary, makes life much easier for you as well along with the extra money youll get

Tiling is in demand the most as there are a few plasterers about now because of the lack of work in the site commercial work, domestic side is still really good if you build the right contacts, but i will tell you how to do that. Soon as the houses start to pick up and selling again the construction industry will go into overdrive again and all tradesman will be in demand again, concentrate on the domestic market with the 3 skills above and if you keep your standards up, you will find you shouldnt be out of work and have pockets full of money. I go quite into depth about how to run a successfull business in these trades on the courses, just got to listen carefully to what i say as many have before that are doing very well on here even in these challenging times

Thanks darren. Ur posts are just out of this world as usual. I'd like to do plastering, bathroom installation and tiling. U mean u want to offer these in 4-5 days or start doing the bathroom installation for 4-5 days instead of one day? When u think u'll have this new thing running?
Do u do kitchen fitting course? if not which is best place?
Do ur handouts cover the whole course? how helpful is the handout?

Its the bathroom course that will be upgraded from the 1 day to the 4-5 days, the tiling courses and plastering courses are unchanged
Theres not a lot of kitchen fitting courses around, dont know really whats involved in a course like that so cant really comment, i suppose it would consist of erecting unit carkases which is pretty straight forward really, the only hard bit about kitchen fitting is the router cuts for the work top, getting the cut on the return perfectly,, joiners usually charge about £100 per cut to do this, once you can do those, fitting a kitchen aint that hard, just build the flat pack units screw them to the wall after levelling them and stick the bench on the top and screw down, hang the doors and adjust

My opinion would not to try and take on too many trades or you can be classed as jack of all trades, master of none. Tiling , plastering, people expect these to go hand in hand and years ago plasterers were taught to tile while learning there trade as an apprentice, the bathroom fitting links in with these two trades as well because its a bit simple plumbing that you are doing, you aint calling yourself a full time plumber

So its up to you really, if your starting from scratch, learn what you need to get out there in peoples houses and make some money and add the kitchen fitting on as your career progressess
