is work this year slower??

[tiler burden]

hi lads

has anybody noticed it getting harder to get work this year than last.

i am doing plastering and tiling at the moment but i have noticed that hitting 150 a day is becoming harder to achieve in both plastering and tiling. theres loads more plasterers and tilers advertising than last year and the calls are 40% down on the previous year

are interest rates kicking in or is the influx of common market countries and fast track courses hitting the trade more significantly than expected??

any honest thoughts on this year so far............

Hi mate
my observation on this, is that there is an influx of new tilers on the jobs market - you only have to read this website to get an angle on how many.
I have thought about asking concept if he is willing to use some of his army training and doing a few contract killings on tilers in my area - thin the market out a bit :wink_smile:

yes it does seem to be getting a bit harder, have been self employed for 2 years, have never had to advertise anywhere so far, have not had my van signwritten YET - this is my next job - bit of a mobile advert, see how it goes. Like to hear🙂 that phone ringing every day

to be honest ive got more on now than this time last year and i dont advertise.

bar any cockups im booked to end of May, but im doing a lot of stone work now days so not unusal for me to be on the same job for a week or three..

i dont bother to advertise for the above reason, the trade is becoming flooded with all the get trained up quick courses. when i get a call its a recomedation so normaly get the job, i also do a fair bit of tiling for Ikea and several plumbers and builders etc

how you get in with IKEA ? Haven't tried that avenue yet - there is one just down the motorway from me in Leeds.
Do you get free meatballs ? Heard they are very good

you need to get in with the Kitchen fitters rather than ikea direct, the fitters are all sub-contractors and normaly have to include the tiling as part of the full kitchen fit. they just get you in to do it for them as they dont like or cant tile. ive also do some B&Q and MFI work..

Always the route in to bigger contract as most companies will take people on a recomendation from a worker that will vouch for them, try the old bung in the hand, or the promiss of the bung when your in, worked for me, speaks every language does the bung

A subtle few pound notes in the hand works wonders, especially when going into the hand of a young lad at at tile shop to suplement his wages.....

If you are prepared to spend £30 or more quid on an advert in the paper for 3 lines on a Friday night, that money would be better spent elsewhere - in the back pocket of a tile shop employee - see which gets you more work ???? :wink_smile:
