Here's some photos of what I'm dealing with.
I'm sorry to say I ignored the start from center as I was impatient and scared. This was a quick job and as I said earlier just to give me an idea. I started from a corner and laid them by eye. Is this madness?

I started by the door, think I need to come away from the wall a little more.

The right side tiles will have to be cut, if I started from the center wouldn't I have to cut both right and left.

My concerns are:
1. An old one, what should I be paying for the adhesive per 20/25kg bag?
2. Spacers, should I use them as there are many inconsistencies in size (width)?
3. If starting from the center out wouldn't I have to cut on all sides of the room as to just 3?

Best way to lay slate is by eye..

Price for adhesive varies but around £15 a bag is quite normal.

Just bought my adhesive and sealer, may have a go at laying tomorrow. "The perfect butt", I like it!!!!

Oh yeah bought a grout float for £7.50 from a so called bargain shop only to find another over the road in said bargain shops bargain nemesis for £2.99. Rubber mallet for £1.50 instead of £3.00 as well, sorted........well they both look the same!!!!

It's always good to get a bargain

You can shift it over as you have kitchen units going in too dont you? The idea is to keep the cutsh sides of the room and where it meets your plinths.

OK!!!! About 9 Hours later and my back is in half, I need a beer. You tilers earn every penny you charge. This was a massive learning curve and I'm real worried that when I stand on them I either going to be rocking back and fore or I'll just hear a SNAP!!!!

As you can see the third row, second tile is a real toe stubber, any tips (apart from wear good shoes)?

As a side note 500ml of sealer will do around 60 30X60cm tiles twice.

slate can be cut with a sharp chisel. lay it flat on the floor and tap it with your mallet. The high spot should flake off. If it's really high, do it in two bites.
