Floor prep....

What would you guys do with this before you tiled it? Joists are 5x2, boards are just over 1/2".

18mm ply pver the lot? Have to be carefull that I dont pierce pipework with screws!! :yikes: Unfortunatly theres a lot of it under there, including gas.......

Or would you lift the boards and screw 18mm directly to the joists?

looking at the picture.....with amount of loose boards and cut boards you would have to ensure that all boards are screwed down anyway before overboarding so i would remove them and replace them with 18mm wpb.

Hence the question bud, the floor is in a hell of a mess, worst one I've come across to be honest.

Well if you were thinking of overboarding with 18mm then height cant be an issue. I would remove all boards, maybe alter pipework while I coould. Overboard with 22 or 25 mm ply then a 6mm tile backerboard. Jobs a goodun and will last many years.

Height isnt to much of an issue but obviously I cant go too mad. There was a lot in the room:-



and its all going back, allbeit in different places. Bath and shower positions are swapping and basin going over by rad. Floor has a bounce if I jump on it and Im no heavywieght, (12.5 stone).

Never been overly concerned before but this ones got me thinking a bit! Walls are all over the place, as was the ceiling.

Had to overboard the ceiling due to Artex not being adhered, dubbed out all the high spots and the two coats of multi:-

I'd go,same as Sir Ramic, rip out the floor and replace with 22mm wbp and hardibacker

Oops, just thought I havent given the full picture....!

Wall with window and to the left of window are outside walls. To the right and immediatly to the left of the door are masonry partiotion walls that are, wait for it, (drum roll please....), sat on the bloody joists! No steel just good ole timber. :yikes:

just a thought but id be tempted to lift old boards, fix 18mm ply, then ditra matting

that also includes the rip out and overboarding ceiling, not just four bags of gypsum! Also had to add timber in loft due to joist being in the wrong place and a lack of them.......

So tell me about this Ditra matting then. I know what it is but Ive never used it. I understand that its a de-coupling membrane but if its adhered to the substrate, how is this decoupled?

Floor joists are 4x2 not 5 as I first thought and there is deflection in the mid part of the floor when its stood on. Never had experience of dealing with a floor this bad!

best to remove floorboards then nog and strengthen joists to remove deflection then use wp ply 22mm screwed down for a solid floor

Cant nog the entire floor due to amount of pipwork in the void mate

plumbers made a mess of it cut outs have taken some strength out you can still nog and strengthen beams were cut outs not an easy one are there any leaks as pipe work looks dicky around joins (copper) remove all floor boards and strengthen structure as best you can

Pipes have been in there for some time. There is evidence of a leak but I think this was from the shower. Mains pressure cold and low pressure hot, everything seems water tight, allbeit not that well put together. Also seems to be gas running accross too.

To be honest Id be inclined to glue and screw 2x2 to the top of the exiting joists and re-deck in 18mm wbp but I havent go the hieght to play with, door also opens into the room making this a no go.

So I suggest to the customer that boards need to come up, add in 4x2 where I can and then re-deck with 18mm wbp. However what if after all this there is still deflection?

to revisit this one last time, (promise!), any reason I cant re-deck with 22mm P5 and then overboard this with 12mm WBP? Reason for asking is it will be less critical to get the noggins in the right place to support edges of the ply, the P5 of course having T&G which I can glue.
