Lets start at the beginning, apologies for the backstory.
Our house is 22 years old, the floor is a stony screed finish and has 6-7mm level difference between the hallway and the lounge. The floor was mostly clean, never been tiled too except for the kitchen where they were tiled from new. The story is a little different now, as we had a tiler come in to do the job and made an mess of it. No grout line was remotely near the 3mm spacing agreed, even though levelling clips were used, the tiles were not pushed tight, when levelling clips where broken off the next day, they were loose and could slide up and down the tile edge, more than 3mm and no adhesive nearby. All this lead to the tiles running out and when they met up round the hall/lounge to hall/dining room there was a good 13mm grout line, lippage in countless areas, a sloped section of floor due to the slope in the screed finish, tiles once out the lounge were not getting buttered, adhesive seemed to be made of gold dust so little was getting used after the lounge, just a bit of adhesive on the tile and put straight onto the floor, no junction was square, the 25% of tile wastage I had allowed for (to have spares and some) was all used up before the lounge (first room) had been completed, the list goes on. We got to the point where we had to call it a day after giving the tiler far too many chances to rectify the increasingly poor workmanship. After all this, me and my other half had to remove £2000 worth of floor tiles and throw them in a skip and try start again. Trying to clean the floor up as much as possible afterwards.
So the job, 60m2 of floor area, starts in a hallway, goes into a lounge which goes into a dining room and leads back to the hallway, downstairs WC off the other side of the hallway, kitchen with a 3 seater island, that then leads into a utility room with store under the stairs (standard David Wilson home). We are looking at using a 75x75 or 80x80 tile, we had a 75x75 tile, but due to the stress caused first time round we may look to find a different tile so it doesn't remind us of the bad experience we are currently getting over. Tiles will be rectified porcelain, likely 9/9.5mm thick, ideally 2/3mm grout line, and looking to use epoxy grout.
We want an experienced tiler in these types of installations as the tilers who we have seen since, seem a little hesitant but also just want the work as its a large area and decent pay day. This is what happened first time round and we cannot go through that again.
