Ceramic floor tiles and plywood problem

Hi

I had ceramic floor tiles fitted 4 years ago by a bathroom installer in the main bathroom.

The ceramic floor tiles are on 6mm plywood, fitted over the original chipboard flooring.

I want to fit new ceramic floor tiles now.

If I remove the tiles and adhesive, can I lay 15mm plywood over the 6mm plywood?

I was just thinking if I could save the extra work in removing the 6mm plywood.

What are my options for doing this the easiest, but the correct way?

Many thanks

Personally I'd remove the 6mm ply and replace with 6mm Hardie Backer glued and screwed....

The title says
Ceramic floor tiles and plywood problem

Does that mean there is/was a problem with the existing floor? as in, that's the reason why we're replacing it?

I definitely don't think that removing the 6mm ply will add much 'extra work'

If you were to install 15mm ply on top of all this will you not have crazy height issues with the doorway?

Thanks for getting back and for also letting me know about the 6mm hardie backer.

I will consider the option of removing the existing plywood.

The reason I asked if the 6mm plywood could be left, without removing was because it would take alot of extra work and time to get the adhesive out of the screw heads holding the plywood down.

I also did not want to remove the plywood more aggressively and then damage the chipboard flooring.

I was also abit concerned that if I remove all the screws holding down the plywood, then there would be alot of holes in the chipboard flooring from the screws.

In your opinion, if I was to lay the new 15mm plywood or 6mm hardie backer on the existing 6mm plywood glued and screwed, would that be OK?

Just for reference, the house was built in 1999.

Many thanks

If you were to lay the 15mm ply on the 6mm I would say it would be ok as long as the screws used go through the chipboard should be fine... I would then fix hardi onto that plywood just for a guarantee of a good, solid and long lasting bond.

Hi Mr Tea Bag

Thank you for the info!

Can I just check what you mean please.

You mentioned fitting the 15mm plywood on the 6mm plywood providing the screws go through the chipboard.

What do you mean please “I would then fix hardi onto that plywood”

Do you mean 6mm hardie on top of 15mm plywood?

Or 6mm hardie on top of the existing 6mm plywood.

I was going to consider 15mm plywood on the existing 6mm plywood.

Or 6mm hardie on the existing 6mm plywood.

Either option, it will be glued and then screwed going through the existing 6mm plywood and chipboard.

Many thanks
