BAL WP1 Tanking System - Question. - TilersForums.com

Hi Guys

I'm just about to tank a shower cubicle, I have my shower tray and shower installed.
However in BAL's documentation I can't find out how long between coats you'll need to
leave it.

Also any hints, tips or general advise on tanking would be greatly appreciated.

you only need to second coat where the tape is, do that bit first and just let it go off abit....30mins or so, leave it all for 24 hours to dry then tile...

Do you? I give the whole thing a second coat. I thought that's what it needs but then haven't read the instructions in a while.

I apply the tape, brush over tape with WP1, then 2 coats with a trowel is how I normally do it

The instructions only say to coat over the tape to a maximum of 2mm.

bal say 2 coats on the tape, then coat the rest approx 2mm thick, however 2 coats all over would proberly do no harm at all....lol

It certinly does so I stand corrected

1. Prime all surfaces with BAL PRIME APD and allow to dry
(15-30 mins).
2. Using a suitable brush or steel float, apply
BAL WATERPROOF COATING at:
– Internal and external corners of walls/partitions
– Wall junctions with bases/upstands/columns
– At pipe penetration points/drainage channels/outlets
– Junctions of different bases/background materials
– Cracks and joints in background/base
3. Reinforce with BAL POLYESTER TAPE.
4. Apply second coat of BAL WATERPROOF COATING over
the BAL POLYESTER TAPE.
5. Using brush or steel float, apply BAL WATERPROOF
COATING to primed walls at a max. 2mm thickness.
6. Apply BAL WATERPROOF COATING to primed floor.
7. Reinforce with BAL POLYESTER MATTING (may be cut
to correct size with scissors).
If applying in heavy duty wet areas (e.g. communal showers
and industrial wet process areas) and/or where some vibration
or deflection in the base may be expected (e.g. timber bases):
8. Bed matting into coating and apply a second layer of
BAL WATERPROOF COATING over top.
9. Allow membrane to dry for min. 24 hours before tiling.
When dry, background is suitable for BAL ready-mixed (walls
only) or cementitious powder adhesives. No priming required.
NOTE: BAL WATERPROOF COATING does not provide a wearing
surface and is designed for use with tiling.

Hi Andy, thats what i thought until I had a conversation with Bal technical the other day, they say you should always apply two coats, the leaflet in box doesn't mention this as I pointed out to Bal.

not good then if there product data sheet says one thing, and there tech depot say another....

I always do two coats, painting or trowel in different directions. I have always done it like that just to be sure of coverage
