As Antonio - that exploitation!
No wonder it's difficult to train/keep an apprentice. If they can't earn you 2 hours work a day they aren't worth having, but over that they should be paid the full minimum at least.
Even on youth opportunities scheme I've always paid more for effort and when I employed I often had to teach 'Tilers' stone or geometric work!
My last apprentice has been learning for 17 years now - my son, and it was worth every penny ( actually £0000.00's).

O

One Day

I had an unoffical apprentice for nearly a year. He started off very well and as a result of his effort plus the fact he was helping me earn more, i ended up paying him 80 pounds a day. Sometimes even more if we had a particularly good job. He was 19 and unfortunately ended up with all the 19 year old baggage. It didn't work out the way i had hoped.
I'd recommend paying them a bit more than minimum as they improve. We all need a bit of financial motivation.

It was,nt about being tight it was trying to find a wage I can afford to pay for every single week without having to lay off when/if things get slack as I already have a labourer to pay....but the aim is to train two people so i could start 2 teams of people trained to my standard eventually and give my knees a rest lol
plus they would get bonuses of some sort when things are going well or they impress me with their effort......I sort of see it as giving someone the oppurtunity to become a bathroom specialist who one day could be earning a grand a week ish instead of being stuck in a dead end factory job.
:confused2:

As soon as they are earning you the money they will be out on their own and they'll take your contacts with them!
Cynical, no fact.
If you've got the work just sub contract and earn off them from day 1.

I agree it is achievable, with a bit of luck with finding the right subbies, but i have seen some of the tilers standards around my way some ok and some horrendous and rarely the odd good one(the really busy ones)....I,ve done a couple of Wetrooms on wynyard estate near Stockton....if i do any more I will give you a shout as I am certain your in the good category
