Was in B&Q today getting some baton wood and had a little look at the tiling tools, (I never buy my tiling tools from b&q as they stock rubbish), but noticed something new. Self adhesive baton for tiling. Basically its a strip of self adhesive with a plastic ledge which the tile sits on to stay in place, then you just tile over it instead of removing it. Can't see it being much cop but thought i'd ask if anyone had dared to try it out.

Next they will be selling self adhesive wall & floor tiles
"just peel and stick" LOL 🙂

Lets invent some and go on that "Dragons Lair" programme - I can picture it now -
Do you think they would invest or kick us out 🙂

heres another crap invention seen in b and q .....we are all doomed if this takes off......NOT!!!!!, grout in a areosol can....he he

Use Palace super grip, no battens required, tile straight to your tile line half way up then work down to the floor

Darren - honest question here - no disrespect meant - Palace Supergrip ?
Thought that was at the crap end of the markest as adhesives go ?
Alawys use mapei myself - same thing, no battens required, maybe a pound or so extra a tub - I trust the make. !🙂

I remember looking at that self-adhesive baton out of curiosity a few weeks back, it just seemed like a glorified thicker piece of sticky tape. I really couldn't work out how the thing would be useful. now B&Q's orange buckets they do for a quid and also those rubber 'tuff tubs' are excellent so its not all bad there!

Leatherface you really rate mapei, and to be honest, I really wouldn't mind giving it a go, as others on the forums have said its alright but I have never seen it in my area (SE London/Kent) who stocks it?

Why pay a quid for an orange bucket when you should have an ample supply of old adhesive buckets you can clean out and re-use ? 🙂

Hi Leatherface, I allways use the palace supergrip tub gear, personally ive tryed them all and thats what i find the most strongest, each to there own i suppose, Palace are at the cheaper end of the market but i find them ok, if it does the job well, more £££ in the pocket for me on selling the materials, i always buy it direct from the manufacturer and get it at fantastic prices, get it delivered by the pallet load

Sounds as though you have it covered - more buying power !
Do they also manufacture a tub adhesive for wet areas ?

Topp's fix is made by Palace and they have just brought out a waterproof topps fix for wet area's.

There is no such thing as a waterproof adhesive, A dispersion (tub) adhesive are classed in "AA" or "B".
The AA adhesive is for the wet areas, but it doesnt mean its waterproof. it means that water will enter it, pass through it without breaking down the structure of the adhesive, thats why a tanking system should be done to protect the background.
The class B adhesive breaks down when water penertrates it therefore resulting in tile failure.
Super grip is a class B adhesive and should only be used in dry / occasionally wet areas, this is because it has acrylic compounds in.
For persistantly wet areas use AA with tanking.

Im not saying or promoting palace in any way, just saying what i use,
Leatherface, if you want to send me a pm ill let you know about bulk buying prices if your interested, but got to be a bit carefull about telling everyone on here as they dont normally supply to tradesmen, only to shops

Thanks may consider it.
I already have an option to buy "stonefix adhesive" by the pallet at a very good rate - cement based. Supplied by specialist tiling products in Harrogate -have used it once or twice - very good. Have room in my garage for a pallet of tubs - what's the shelf life if left unopened in a garage ?

P.S
I KNOW THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WATERPROOF ADHESIVE

Shelf life 6 - 12 months unopened depending on manufacture, the down side to buying direct is that you loose touch by not going in regular to the tile shops, therefore they dont send you any jobs, great if you are doing bigger jobs all the time and supplying the gear, makes a difference on the profit

Just incase you think i'm a muppet here's an extract from Topps tiles website.

Fix additional battens or studs to ensure all edges of Aquapanel are supported. Fill the gaps between Aquapanel boards with waterproof tile adhesive. To strengthen the joints Aquapanel joint tape may be bedded into the wet adhesive. Your walls are now ready to tile using flexible waterproof adhesive.

Exactly, waterproof means water will not get through it, not the case in adhesives, Water passess through it, the class types tells you wether it will affect the properties, Water resistant is the propper term as you mentioned

i use granfix acrylic and it eliminates slip but im gonna try mapeis d1!! anybody know of a spf powder that has zero slip ???

Phone Mapei Technical in Birmingham - ask them to post you a copy of "the little black book of adhesives"
Many of their powders are high grab & zero slip 🙂
