I have the chance for three jobs tiling on to a Victorian tiled mosaic floors.
Do I dig up the tiles and sand bed beneath or tile on top?
One of these jobs will be laying Granite the other two will be normal ceramic tiles.
If anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated!!

Regards

Dave

Depending on circumstances I would look at using Durabase CI mat or Ditra before laying tiles so if anything does go west your tiling would be saved

I would be tempted to take them up and lay a new substrate! If the tiles are in reasonable condition you can sell them very quickly to restoration shops. The substrate under Victorian tiles tends to be lime mortar based or just earth without any form of DPM. If you overlay with Natural stone you may cause problems with Efflorescence. Just my opinion.

Do you think I should lay a DPM and 4 inches of screed after digging out the sand etc, and then tile?

The products mentioned by Wetdec are they usable in this scenario?

Cheers

Dave

I have never used Durabase CI Mat so I can't comment on it. I only comment on products that I have physically used in other words tried and tested. Wetdecs solution of Ditra matting is perfect as well. I have used rolls and rolls of the stuff and i think its a fantastic product. When I was fixing I used to try and persuade all my clients to use ditra. A fabulous product that made my life easy.

So! sorry to be long winded but "Yes Wetdecs answer makes sense and a lot less work of course". I think I saw Durabase at the KBB show thats if it was the product I think it is a decoupling membrane mat in yellow?

Why would they want to tile over beautiful victorian tiles anyway unless they really have had it and look terrible! Why not pay to get them restored if possible - sacrilidge!!!!

Well they are my thoughts as well Especially as its what I do for a living but as they say "There's nowt queerer than folk"

Firstly I'd ask them "are you mad?" Then I would be seriously tempted to do all that remedial work in exchange for the tiles! How can you want to cover victorian tiles up? I'd be gutted if I was asked to do that

its a shame that they want to tile over or should i say a sin. however i would not risk going over them. looks like a new floor 4"Concrete and 2" screed not to mention the dpm, doing it that way you should not have any come backs:thumbsup: that is my opinion but every1 differs.

I wouldn't do it for nothing they obviously have no idea what they are worth or they wouldn't be asking someone to cover them

The likelyhood is the tiles fall into the minton hollins catagory, if this is the case then they will be laid tightly and well. If you decide to take them up then thats your choice but as I said earlier the use of Durabase CI or Ditra mat should answer your needs.

Have a look see what you think, if not this time maybe the next.

Thanks for the pointers! I agree it seems more than a little strange to get rid of a perfectly decent floor especially in the name of "modernisation", but hey a job is a job as long as it is completed properly. I will also rescue the old tiles for a future reincarnation in a more loving environment.

Thanks again

Dave:thumbsup:
