got three jobs coming up that will require me to put ply up,and just double checking which thickness of ply would be needed? 2 of the jobs require me to remove broken tiles from a whole shower wall,as they have cracked from top to bottom-im removing all tiles and putting ply up to hopefully prevent any further cracking.
The other is a kitchen floor that has existing vinyal down, which sits on top of floor boards, so ply will need to go down on top.

Normally i get a joiner mate to come in and do it, but with money being tight and having seen that its not exactly rocket science to do it, im going to give it a bash myself.

well don't put it on a wall use plasterboard or tile-board on the floor take the vinyl tiles up so you can screw the floorboards to the joists then screw down 18mm ply but don't forget to seal the edges and back first personally i prefer to use 10mm tile-board on the floor 😛ete

dont forget to seal the edges and back???? Whats this!?

try using hardi-backer board 6mm on floor saves height and 12mm on walls stronger for fixing to and better weight to wall ratio

Malcolm does 6mm hardi-backer give you the same structural strength as 18mm Ply ? 😛ete

as far as i'm aware it does BUT WILL DOUBLE CHECK WITH Hardi backer first or you can contact them on
0800 068 3103 or visit the web site JamesHardieEU.com
hope this helps

Plasterboard on walls take up tiles check floorboards no loose ones if floor is sound no movement......... 6mm ply is fine screw every 120mm never had a prob, all this 10 and 18mm load of *******s

probably started it now

Im sure you will get a few replies to that one,:83: Robbbin

Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go but I personally wouldn't go less than 12m/m for a floor.

What adhesive you use ? :83: :indian_brave:

bal superflex rapid never had a prob I think its the mix that makes the diff
always use a paddle and have it so you can pour onto floor not to wet

Hi Spenny use aquaboard on the walls, wall to weight ratios good with this product. With regards the floor lift vinyal, British standards require 18mm ply never use 6mm use sbr primer to seal back and sides. Alternative you could use G Matt.:beatdeadhorse5:

Floors I use 6mm ply screwed 100 centers, prime and then use Bal
2 part flexi never had a problem.

Walls marine Ply is best but you con use mosture tolorant plaster
board for the cheaper option.

you are best using the normal plasterboard adhesive doesn't stick as well to the moisture resistant board The green one lol why do you guys like using ply the only thing i find it good for is structural uses if its on walls i try to overboard it 😛ete

have got the hardi backer rep calling in mon/tue next week will quiz him for answers on structural

I spoke to the nomoreply guy recently and quizzed him over their 6mm board before I used it on a kitchen floor. I asked how can it be as strong as 18mm ply and he said by itself it's not, but when used with their glue and screws it is.

probably 'cos my old master did Pete, and as an awestruck youngster his word was gospel! I still think he was the best and tidiest tradesman I've had the pleasure to work with. But times change and I'm slowly dragging myself (and hopefully a few others!) into the 19th century.(lol)

They have SAID that before but as yet they have provided no documentation backing up the statement!
