I am just starting a new floor job. It has underfloor heating in the screed already and it's about 120 square metres, even though it's only an entrance hall. The tiles are 800mm x 800mm stone tiles and 20mm thick. The room is about 25m x 5m and the customer doesn't want any expansion joints. Rich people assume they can what ever they want. Also she wants a 2mm grout gap. With covered the whole floor in ditra matting and start the bulk tiling on monday. Has anyone ever used a tile this size. It took a whole day just to load into a room. Just looking for hints and good wisdom. Also have to do 2 staircases including the side of the staircase. That's all been templated. I'll be amazed if this one goes smoothly. Tiles already turned up a week late.

Sorry to rant on. Please comment

What stone is it? The customer can want what they want imo for a start off 2mm is below BS and it will almost certainly require expansion joints:whatchutalkingabout

Hi & all the best with it. make the grout line at every 4 metres a Silicon ( non staining ) joint for even with it only being 2mm a flexible point here will take up any coeifficient gain within the tiles, +- 1mm more than enough. enjoy.

Hi faceman, you have a heck of a job on your hands. Ive done alot of 600 x 600's. They are a pain so i can imagine even lifting and laying a 20mm 800 x 800 will be struggle enough neve mind getting them level. Did you self level the floor as the slightest bump or rise will play havoc with lippage?
Ive done 1000 by 300's for walls, rectified at 2mm and it can be tough going. They where ceramic and alot easier to cut.
What stone is it, are the tiles calibrated, they would need to be for 2mm gaps?
Are they pre-sealed?

Good luck anyway, just a few more things to think about. Hope you charged accordingly!

I agree wi tilinglogistics, Surely you have to put expansion joints in, i thought they were round about every 10 lnr mtr?

Thanks everyone for replying. They are limestone tiles which need to sealed twice before even touched. We have used schluter de-coupling mat to replace the need for expansion joints. It's debatable whether that is enough. We also understand there might need to be replaced tiles due to cracking afterwards. I fortunately am just the fitter and the supplier deals with the customer. All concerns have been raised with him and he has informed them. He has a disclaimer because of our concerns.

Expansion joints are laid to a maximum 10 x 10 mtr bay as standard with underfloor heating this should be reduced by half.
