Where To Start With This One?

Hi guys,

Just started a job today ripping an old shower out, was planning on using plasterboard/tile backer and then tanking but have discovered many potential problems.

The plastered wall is soaking wet near the bottom, just crumbles away when you rub it. The battened wall, has old tiles behind it, the battens are more spaced out than I'd like, and fixed to old battens behind the old tiles! They also don't go all the way to the ceiling.

What would you advise doing? Over boarding the plastered wall with tile backer and tanking?

With the battened wall, preferably I'd like to rip it back to original battens and reboard but I don't think customers budget will allow, nor do I have the time.

Any advice appreciated!

Now that is one hell of a bodge job....take it right back and start a fresh?...will last longer than another bodge... Also cheaper in the log run for he customer too

That's what I've ended up doing, it actually got worse, the shower tray was sitting on a sheet of chipboard and blocks of wood, not even fixed to anything!

There's a proud 'tradesman' out there getting away with that! He must have found that piece of weyroc in a skip and it made his day.

Absolute shambles! The waste pipe goes straight down, and then back up again under the boards, too.

I told the customer about this and he said "oh that might be why it doesn't drain very well!"
