Is it right that when tiling natural stone onto a wall it has to be on plasterboarded walls and not on plastered walls , so if a customer wanted a natural stone tile on there wall and it was say for arguments sake a painted wall would you have to hack the plaster off the wall and then plasterboard out to take the extra weight .

Yes and no.

You have to take safe weights into account. Plaster can take 20kg per square metre, plasterboard 32kg per square metre. The only thing you can do is to weigh the tiles. Most will be over the 20kg per square metre limit - the reason I say yes and no is that some can be over the 32kg per square metre limit. If that is the case your next option is something like Aquapanel which can take 50kg per square metre.

Spot on mcp77,large format tiles,or thick stone tiles really go for the safe option and board in backerboard.Better to be safe than have a law suit on ya

So if the weight of the tiles was over 20 kg i would have to tile to Aquapanel or platerboard, but if i put the plasterboard directly on too the wall surly the weakest point is the plaster wall it is being stuck too in which case would i not have to plasterboard to the bare brick
