Discuss Tiling painted walls in an underground swimming pool?! in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

I have a job to price...

A hotel I am pricing a job for want some pillars, located in their underground health club pool area, tiled. No problem apart from the fact that they have been covered in oil based paint, multiple layers by the looks of it and with the obviously high humidity levels the paint on the first 300mm of the pillar (from the floor) has started to bubble up and degrade.

I can't say I'm confident about tiling straight on top even with a good key-ing. My first thought was to get the old wire brush attachment on the grinder and strip back to the rendered surface. One problem is that there has to be as little debris as possible because of how close the pool is.

Id key, prime and then fling em up with rapid set addy but are there any specific alternatives of adhesive or prep method to make sure the tiles stay put?

The humidity is the main cause for concern for me. What's the answer lads?

Just briefly skimmed over your post so sorry if Im way off the mark. but. would 4mm marmox or equivalent wrap round the pillars?

Well yes, that would work fine....no idea why I didn't think of that before - early morning brain fog!
Cement based backer board, mechanically fixed..job done! Cheers mate :)

Mr Tiler

could you not also try a paint stripper and add labour to the quote for stripping the paint? or are they no good with oil based?

I was going to suggest tea bags and Ali's ideas in that order. The marmox "wrap around" boarding is quite thick though

It would depend on the size of the pillars. Might not be able to do it in a full sheet. But can't think of a easier way to do it.
