hi guys,

due to tile onto new build house (customer been in house for year) and want to remove existing tile effect vinyal thats glues down to the floor. Ive ripped up a wee bit to see that the floor below is concrete. What should i do with this before tiling? Do i need ot prime concrete or simply just clean it up to be dust free?

Also, please state your opinions to hopefully settle an arguement. Do you prime walls before tiling as well as priming floors? I say that a quick once over on the walls is always worthwile, my mate suggests that its only needed on floors!!!

In my opinion if all the old adhesive is gone there shouldn't be a problem with a clean dust free concrete surface when using a cement based adhesive. If there is a risk of movement or cracking in the concrete pad you should put down a crack isolation membrane and similar if you need waterproofing.Otherwise tile straight on the concrete but you should dampen each section down before you spread the adhesive.

prime walls if its new plaster, you can't go wrong if you prime it but can if you don't so it's worthwhile doing if your unsure

There are reasons why substrates are primed, and if your mate is a tiler then he should know the reasons. You MUST always follow adhesive manufacturers recommendations regarding priming, each has their own stipulated products for different situations.

Quite right Grumpy always go with the instructions but generaly what kind of primer would you use on a concrete floor S.B.R. or Acrylic Emulsion, personaly i would use S.B.R. never been sure about Acrylic even on walls.

Use washing up liquid and warm water for the floor and sponge and clean the area before tiling. And.Always always prime! Once a chancer always a chancer!!!

I normally use BAL APD diluted 1:1 and only to "lock in" any residual dust. I have never had a need yet to use SBR so my little bottle remains unopened.
