Hi. I was hoping the experts might clarify something for me. I am having a new extension built and the upper floor is being contructed using 18mm or 22mm Weyroc. My question is basically do I need anything else on top of this floor in order to tile? Given the fact that the floor is a minimum 18mm and new will it be enough

I was originally thinking 12-18mm ply (from numerous posts here) but I now get the feeling this is suggested in place of the flooring. My builder has said 6mm ply will sufficient but I am reluctant to believe him but he says there will be too much of a rise in floor level between rooms if using anything greater (assuming for example 12mm tile+adhesive+18mm ply. I feel 6mm will not give the correct strength to the floor if the Weyroc is not enough and may even have problem at a later stage (for example with screws pulling threw).

The tiles I have are 1.2cm thick so am reluctant to use too thick ply. I was maybe looking at Nomoreply @ 6mm with suitable flexible adhesive (BAL FastFlex maybe?) The thing I am most worried about is the quite expensive tiles being cracked. Any help is appreciated.
Regards,
Corey

6mm no more ply is strong enough but i always use 9mm no more ply.make sure you use the adhesive and screws correctly and you wont have a problem. i used it on a floor that was creaking last week and it has stopped it.

If height is an issue, which it normally is, then 6mm hardi backerboards are perfect for floor covering.

What do you think about replacing the 18/22mm Weyroc with 25mm ply and tiling straight onto it using BAL Fastflex and suitable grout? I guess this would eliminate the need for overboarding but still give the floor the right strength and save money with not having to buy the hardi boards or NMP?

I am a bit confused after reading previous posts about tiling on a weyroc floor. After having bathroom carpet for 28 years, I have decided to tile the bathroom. The old weyroc floor seems to be in excellent condition, even, not worn, swollen or moving. we were going to cover it with plywood to tile on but it would be much easier to tile on to the weyroc. Waiting to go! Which method would you recommend?? :huh2:

Chipboard, being a compressed particle board can be a little unstable if moisture gets to it. This can lead to, at least, some of the particles breaking away or even owrse the board "blowing" and potentially loosening your tiles. There are many tilers on this forum will not tile directly to chipboard/wayroc for this reason. A lot depends on the usage it will get, how much deflection the floor has (how strong!) and what adhesive you intend to use. To be on the safe side, 6mm hardiebacker board glued and screwed would be the best solution depending how big your floor is.
