was in my local suppliers yesterday and a tiler came in and got some tile sealer,in an aerosol, never seen it before, the tiler said it was brilliant and quick, but knowing of his work i have my suspiscions. Has anybody used it? and if so, is it as brilliant as he says?

had a customer who insisted on using it themselves, never put my hands on it though they claimed it would seal there tiles and grout for life Mmmm! guess where it was purchased(little clue -everyones favourite diy store!)

Are we talking sealguard? It's okay for sealing grout lines but I wouldn't recommend for more than 12 months life.

Really does stink too, so open all the windows before use.

your probably right!! i only offered the customer advice on not to use it,but was spoken to like an idiot and assured this was the best of stuff!!(from b&q) ha ha!!!

I used it because a tile shop recomended to the lady so it was the best thing since sliced bread as far as she was concerned:smash:

gullable-we should tell customers to look it up in the dictionary(cos it isn't actually there) lol

Hi Doug,

A year ago or so there was a bunch of talk about this sealer over at the John Bridge site. Guys were saying there were a lot of reports of people getting extremely sick from the aerosol propellant in the can. They also said the sealer was lousy. I don't recall the name of the stuff but it sure sounds the same as what you are describing.

Well here goes and you don't often hear this from me. I have tried four different ones and they are all rubbish ................. Wait for it...............
Including the Aqua Mix one.

For a sealant to be efffective it has to reach the surface it is meant to be protecting! How can that happen when its being sprayed 50% of it is dispersed somewhere in the atmosphere another 25% drops on the floor if you are trying to seal walls. This stuff is a DIY product meant to fool the public and IMO no pro tiler should bother.

ive tried seal guard once tile shop swore by it but i wont be using it again and i agree crack the windows open it does smell quite strong

Seal Guard - used it, but don't rate it - I have posted on this before

I would definitely consider a respirator before using this again - I don't think there is a window wide enough to open to make me happy.

maybe the pump action one would be better - but as I think it only worked on the grout - a tin and a brush would be better, greener and downright cheaper

Ya know, every tile shop and wholesaler I have ever seen sealer in have all said their product was pretty good stuff.
And most of them probably are...pretty good.
Depending on the application.
Although there are some products that are utter turds.
I bought some DuPont gloss sealer (water-based) to finish some polished slate and it is a good thing I test before I do the whole thing as it left a sort of whitish look to it in a patchy way which was not what we were hoping for.
Luckily I had bought a gallon of the solvent based stuff from another shop previously as that brought out the colors and left a clear look.

The problem with the water-based product, and I did a test at home with another good gloss water-based sealer which did the same, was that any sanding marks coarser than 400 grit would produce the whitish effect.
I have no idea why it wouldn't gloss those patchs up as well, I know the solvent based would take a tile I sanded with 80 grit and it would fill in the lines and actually gloss it up so you could barely see that it was still rough, whereas any water-based, forget about it.

Another point, DuPont has a sealer called "Bulletproof" which doesn't change the color of grout or stone, but even one good application and water sprayed on will just bead right up.
I use it for walls and ceilings in showers and backsplashs, etc, and I put it in a spray bottle which has a jet option for the nozzle and that sure helps with the application process and virtually no overspray, as for clean up it leaves no residue that can't be wiped off with a paper towel.
