I have a job coming up which I need to get a quote in for today and I dont know what to charge.

Job is,

three splashbacks, 11 sockets, glass mosaic border, trim and the area is a total of 6m2 tiling onto old adhesive on the drywall.

thanks

thanks:incazzato:
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Trouble is, we can't see what you are seeing when you quote for the job. As a gut feeling, it should be billed on a day rate and for however many days you will think it will take but when you ask questions like that, you are effectively not asking advice, you are asking the forum members to run your business for you. Learning how to price should have been part of any training you have done and is integral to running a successful business. We, on the forums have no idea what your overheads are, or in most cases unless they are local to you, what the "going rate" is in your area. Only you can know these 2 factors and your pricing must reflect this.

I apologise if I seem to be "having a go" but that is not my intention, To be successful in your tiling business you MUST learn how to cost, and then subsequently tender a competative price, not just ask the guys on here "what to charge".

i merely wanted to know what others would charge. whats the point in this forum ?

do you copy and paste that for every question in this room?

im not having a go either, I've been running a successful business for a year and havent had glass mosaics incorporated in a job before so would like a rough idea of what others would charge!!!!!

Hi there,
The forum can't tell you what you should be charging as grumps has already tried to explain, he was not having a pop at you it was just friendly banter. If you have indeed been running a successful business for the past year then you should have quickly been aware of what your day to day capabilities are, can you do the job in one day? if so then its your usual day rate, just because you are fixing glass mosaics does not make the job suddenly more expensive, if you cannot do the job in one day then charge for two if you feel the customer will pay. The forum will always help in anyway it can but it cannot know what your job looks like, site conditions etc etc, one year is not a long time in the tiling business but well done to you anyway. I have 20 plus years on you and even now i get jobs where i have to think about the costs. Its called experience and no amount of money can buy that very important commodity.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

hi boosha i would charge your normal rate for the 6m of splashy and add on the time you think it will take to set the glass mosaics generally i would charge a half day rate to set a linear border so id be looking to add this in to your final price as mosaics are tricky to get perfect especially with an uneven surface like old adhesive to go onto.good luck.

i also agree with boosha what on earth is the point in having a pricing section in the forum open only to tilers to DISCUSS and GIVE ADVICE on pricing jobs if your merely going to be told your asking someone else to run your business. what a lot of nonsense the guys asking for advice on a pricing matter.fair enough if you dont want to give prices away but dont shoot someone down for tryin to learn something .

Looks like I have opened a can of worms here! The point of my response - not the 20p one, that was a joke - was that as a professional tilers running a business, he should have a good idea of what to charge for a kitchen splashback and not come asking for guys to do it for him. If because he has never fixed glass mosaics before, fair enough, ask about techniques and tooling required and how much longer does it take and then go away and figure out what extra costs he may have incurred to pass on, and then work out his price accordingly.

Maybe he worded the question in such a manner that I picked it up incorrectly, if so then I apologise but I still stand by my original, non-joke response.

We all have to learn sometime, me included, but I can not recall ever needing to ask in these forums what I should be charging as that is indiviual to my own business and circumstances and area of work.

fair enough grumpy i take your points however my point is why is there a section for pricing on here for tilers if they cant come on and ask about pricing, boosha can easily go and ask about tecniques etc on how to go about the job in other sections and yes he can then try and work out accordingly how to price it himself.

it still doesnt answer the question of the pricing section though.

your not running his business for him your helping him with something and i thought that was what the whole point in the forum,im not getting at you grumpy i was just surprised as to the response he got and also the other tilers thanking you for your comments.

I suppose the point of this forum is so that the general public can not see the discussions regarding pricing. It may well just be a general "i charge £50/m2 for laying marble" or my day rate is this and I am in this area, but to try and be specific on a particular job...I don't know if that is what this sub forum was really created for...maybe it was I don't know, Dan may come back and clarify for us.
