Just been given a 2 day job to tile a porch. I popped around today to have a quick look and found painted brick & quarry tiles.

I know the paint will have to come off, but do you think that a layer of SLC would be best suited before I tile? Slate tiles are to be laid, but I am concerned that moisture could cause efflorescence. I have only every tiled with slate indoors. At this moment in time I do not know what type of slate the customer is having.

Cheers Sean

I'd save some money and not use SLC for slate.
Just prepare the substrate and float over with a waterproof/frostproof adhesive and watch out for that corner which has had some 'action'.

As above, I wouldn't bother using SLC here. The same process applies to tiling outside, just be sure that you use suitable materials.

Dont forget the pics of it finished

There are very few levellers that can be used external..

IMO you need to strip that paint right back..

Rich, Just for you.......(as requested).

It was a bit of a bugger to get the paint off. I tried a stiff nylon brush attachment for my drill, but that did not do much damage, then I tried a wax remover, but that did not do much. Then I used a pressure washer which did the trick. The step had 2 thick coats of paint in May, but I found several layers of paint and loads of wax polish.
Cheers

Isnt it amazing the difference a little bit of tiling like that can make to the look of a house?
