Overlapping a vertical tile with horizontal tile

Due to another little mistake, I've realised the tiles I'm carrying through from the main wall to the sink are slightly taller. As it would involve a very small cut which I'm unable to do, is it acceptable to sink the vertical tile behind the horizontal and hide my little mistake? (I think I should have bottom of tiles on main wall to matching one on sink, but I decided to match a grout line instead) 😳

and yet another question....

My middle wall behind sink is 32cm and the tile I'm using is 25cm. Do I need to do two little offcuts either side of the 25cm or can I do a 7cm section into the corner?

If the former, then does that mean I have to do the same with the horizontal tiles on the ledge and the vertical tile above the sink so I have matching grout lines?

Nothing over the sink is stuck to the wall yet.

So, you're saying with the middle wall to cut into the corner rather than a strip each side of a full tile? If so, I'm happier with that considering the grief I'm having with the tile cutter.

yeah i think you have to put the cut to the corner now minnie , if your carrying on up the wall you cant have 2 little cuts running right up do you not have an angle grinder to cut that small strip off ya main tile so it works in nice and flush ? or cant you take them few tiles to tile shop they can whip off that 5mm or so on a wet saw in minutes for you , Battons / books / videos ha ha , love it:smilewinkgrin:

Well the thing is, I right along the wall, there's a dip that I had filled in so the shelf was level. If I hack that out again, I could drop the tile so the bottom of it is level with the wall ones, and once the sealant goes on, it would be disguised anyway wouldn't it? Or do I have to have the vertical tile above the horizontal ones?

I'm running out of batten now (or rather, I don't want to use decent books/videos!).

I've realised I am going to have to have a batten at some stage as I've no horizontal surface to hold up the tiles at the back of the bath. How do I know if I've got hidden pipes?

dont see any reason why you cant have the vertical behind the horizontal as long as you Silicon it well as for ya battens just see if you can find the stud work the wall is hanging on by tapping along the wall (dull thud where the timber runs vertical) either screw into that or just use screws that are only going to enter the wall by 10/12mm, you dont want to put a lot of weight on these put should hold one row till it dries thats all ya need to carry on then. seems like you got time anyway :smilewinkgrin:

It's a concrete wall under the plaster. You don't have stud work there do you? (I'm not a builder obviously).

Maybe someone should invent self-adhesive battens?

I don't have lots of time. I have to get this finished before Christmas, well before Christmas as I've cards to write, presents to wrap, Christmas trees to put up, a computer to buy. What's more, my modem's dying so I need to get this done before my modem dies completely. :smilewinkgrin:

no ya wont have stud work minnie or any pipes either unless there are some obvious chase lines up the walls (where they have been dug out to place pipes in the wall) , so should not be an issue, self adhesive batons eh :drool5: would get me some of them haha, you can get stands for ya batons too. i not got a day off till christmas eve now so erm christmas may be late this year :lol:

But I think looking at your pics tiling in to the corners is the last of your worries. your going to have the mother of all slivers at the window reveal.

I really think you will save your self money by taking them off and finding out more about setting out before you start. you have a whole load of trouble ahead of you if you carry on the way your going.

I don't have time to start again. I need to finish by Christmas. I'm not expecting to do a professional looking job, just neatening up and cleaning up b/f's bathroom. Have you seen any "before" pictures? Just having a different colour (albeit not one I'd have chosen) makes a difference compared to the bogey green ones that were there. :lol:

I spent weeks trying to figure out how I was going to do it and have been up 'til 3 or 4.00am every night trying to figure it out.

Initially I was going to line the tiles up with the end of the window, but it was just causing me no end of bother as that left hand bit of wall above the sink was something like 30cm. I decided to continue the main wall over the sink instead. I also had to hack out some wall that was at an angle from the sink area. Then I had to decide where to start to line up grout lines, level with the sink, level with the shelf above the sink etc.

Here's how it was. See that angled little cut out by the sink. Well I got rid of that by hacking the wall out so I could put a full tile there. Obviously it meant the tiles go past the window which is why I decided to treat the main wall and wall above sink as one wall. I also chopped off a bit of the corner of the shelf as it was hard to actually tell where the edge was as it was just a blob of bumpy wall underneath.

I hacked the ledge down to become level with the sink and hacked that bit out by the sink so it was flush with the main wall. There was more of it than that but I only remembered to take a picture halfway through
