We are tiling 200 rooms to a new hotel in the west end of London.
We have started tiling the floors and in some rooms the new walls are out of square. Not just at right angles but to the opposite walls making the rooms like a squashed box shape. setting out points are from the front edge of shower tray. Which is not always in sq with the door ways. So we have probs. rake cuts to other walls. what is the BS for sq walls for this problem . The walls are straight in themselves but no sq , out buy 25mm over 1200mm x 1000mm. Before we go any further with this job which we started to day can someone give me this answer. Cheers

You say the dri linning is out of square but they don't have a lot of leaway when fixing to block work, it could even be the blockwork which is at fault.

yes the contracts manager is aware. and concerned that he,s paid £40'000 to the dry linners for their work. the manager who signed of the work is worried about his job! thanks for your feed back guys. these walls are not to block work but new metal stud, is there any excuse! the site manager is saying the engineers lines were to fault. pass the buck or what. we can only tile to what is there yes but is it right. NO is my answer it makes my mens work look wrong. over this many rooms rake cutting is more expense and time. who pays ,us as tilers a finishing trade. will they rip down the wall and re-build it i dont think so. same different day. However back to the issue is there building tolerance to the sq ness of walls?

There is no british standard covering how square a room should be. This type of thing will be specified in the architects nbs spec. There will be tolerances in the spec obut in all honesty you can drive a bus between what is practical and what is acceptable eg if a floor is laid using a screed it is acceptable for it to be out of level by 30mm from one end to the other. Obviously this would not be practical. My suggestion would be speak to the qs. He will hopefully agree to pay you for the extras and this will come out of one of the other trades retention.
