hi all.....

just want to confirm my research.....cost aside, is it true to say that the advantage of MARMOX backer board over hardibacker is that Marmox is both waterproof AND insulating whereas hardibacker is just waterproof?

An interesting question and a similar one that i threw at a local tile supplier who was supposed to supply Warm Up thermal boards but instead supplied No More Ply (very similar to Hardibacker). My argument was that the themal boards would hold more heat than the No More Ply. The shop disagreed ( they stock No More Ply) , so i spoke to the NMP rep and when pushed for a definate answer he said that the NMP would not be as efficient as the thermal boards.

So i feel the answer to your question would be Yes the Hardibacker will insulating too but not as good as the Marmox.

One other point.

The Hardibacker is not waterproof. That is to say that it should not be relied upon as a water barrier, unlike Wedi board etc. Hardibacker however, will not break down when immersed in water. Think of it as a piece of clothing. It won't hold water or stop it from passing through it, but neither will it disintegrate if you put it in water.

A newspaper will fall apart if you soak it, whereas a washing up bowl will both contain water and be impervious to it.

I don't know the other product you mention, so I can only speak for Hardibacker.

Hi Brad,

Have a look at our Thermopanel, has the same properties as Marmox boards and a lot cheaper. http://www.tilersforums.com/electric-underfloor-heating/19750-what-great-deal.html

Hi Neale,

I completly agree and No More Ply does not have the same or anywhere close to the same Insulation values as the likes of Thermopanel, Marmox, Wedi.

Have a look at http://www.backerboard.co.uk/thermopanel.htm for specs on Thermopanel

Going to be tiling a kitchen splashback and bathroom soon. The client has had all the old tiles removed. There are patches of old addy left on the walls, leaving them quite rough and textured. Taking all the addy off will take a month of sunday's. My thinking is that I prep the walls with a good BAL primer and then go with the "dot and dab" techique for the tile addy, making sure that I don't go too thick. I would also go with a flexible addy because of the fact that I will effectively be building up.

Just how proffesional is the "dot and dab" technique? Should I make sure that the walls are prepped better?

hi all, feel i can give an opinion on this topic as i sell 2 types of backer board. if someone is tiling onto wood i would sell No More Ply is someone is tiling onto concrete is would reccomend PCS board (marmox equivelent) as this has better heat insullation, i think its a no brainer really.
