Going to be tiling a kitchen splashback and bathroom soon. The client has had all the old tiles removed. There are patches of old addy left on the walls, leaving them quite rough and textured. Taking all the addy off will take a month of sunday's. My thinking is that I prep the walls with a good BAL primer and then go with the "dot and dab" techique for the tile addy, making sure that I don't go too thick. I would also go with a flexible addy because of the fact that I will effectively be building up.

Just how proffesional is the "dot and dab" technique? Should I make sure that the walls are prepped better?
A definite NO! NO! Brad, get the walls prepped properly before you start tiling

hi all, feel i can give an opinion on this topic as i sell 2 types of backer board. if someone is tiling onto wood i would sell No More Ply is someone is tiling onto concrete is would reccomend PCS board (marmox equivelent) as this has better heat insullation, i think its a no brainer really.

Thermal insulation boards are best whatever the subfloor!!

Hi Neale,

I completly agree and No More Ply does not have the same or anywhere close to the same Insulation values as the likes of Thermopanel, Marmox, Wedi.

But you wouldnt expect them to they are two different types of boards designed for two different jobs.

Cement boards such as NMP are a ply replacement strengthening board for overboarding suspect wood floors.

Insulation boards such as pcs, marmox are for insulating not strengthening. Kneel on one they are compressive.

One job 1 board neither do both...............

Does anyone know what the different stress values for the types of boards are?

I'd like to know how much the difference is. I can find values for PCS boards (like marmox, etc.) Thermal Tile Backer Boards from Polyfab Coatings. But can't find anything on the net for hardibacker, etc.
